Talk of the Neighborhood: Local achievements and honors for July 1, 2011
Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Class Acts *
* Reicher Catholic High School graduate Julia DeLaRosa (right) was selected as the Texas Association of Parochial and Private Schools 4A Female Fine Arts Student of the Year for 2010-11. A Russell Scholarship of $500 accom-panies this award.
She was honored at the TAPPS Honor Banquet in San Antonio in June.
Julia received the award due to her outstanding achievements in music, photography, academics and speech. Her honors include: 1st Division Choral Group, All-Region Choir, All-State Choir, first place at state in unaltered photography, first place at state in literary criticism and ready writing, and second place at state in poetry interpretation and spelling.
Julia will attend the University of Nebraska-Lincoln this fall on a full academic scholarship.
* Texas Tech softball player Holley Gentsch (left), a Midway High School graduate, was named to the Capital One Academic All-America second team.
Gentsch, the daughter of Frank and Missy Gentsch of Hewitt, is only the second softball student-athlete in Tech history to be named an Academic All-American.
A two-time Academic All-Big 12 first team selection, Gentsch, a sociology major, has compiled a 3.96 grade-point average during her three years at Tech, while also posting a 4.0 GPA in each of her five previous semesters.
* In the Military *
* Air Force Reserve Airman Roxanne R. Romo (right) graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.
She is the daughter of Jacqueline Felan, of Waco.
* Pitching In *
* The Texas Retired Teachers Foundation awarded G.W. Carver Academy, the science and technology magnet middle school in Waco ISD, a $500 grant written by Carver instructional specialist Jim Heston.
The grant will be used for creating a videography suite capable of allowing students access to video production equipment, movie-editing software, green-screen technology, and other tools that are part of the Carver project-based learning curriculum.
Students will brainstorm video ideas, research the story content, participate as reporters and news anchors, and edit videos. Funds will purchase two Kodak Zi8 HD video cameras and SD cards.
