Talk of the Neighborhood highlights Central Texans’ achievements.
* Class Acts *
* Baylor School of Social Work graduate student Suzanne White (right) of Waco is one of 10 students in Texas to receive a $5,000 Hogg Foundation Scholarship.
White is a nontraditional student, having earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in political science a decade earlier. She was married and at home raising two children when she began her master’s degree in social work at Baylor School of Social Work in 2009.
The special scholarship awards honor the 70th anniversary of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health.
* Area students who graduated from Baylor University’s George W. Truett Theological Seminary in May were Joe Bailey of Waco, Kristen Hoagland of China Spring, and Brandon Weir of Clifton.
* Local students who graduated from Texas State University at San Marcos in May were: Meghan A. Bergman and Bryan C. Dulock of Bruceville; Allen R. Robinson of Elm Mott; John W. Banks, Henry M. Feuhrer and Angela C. Smith of Lorena; Derek L. Tanner of Riesel; Kayla L. Brown, Courtni A. Matelski, Brady H. Bauer, Krystal A. Neumann, Cameron W. McBurnett and Jonathan W. Scott, all of Waco; Holly M. Mercer of West; and Alysse C. Northcutt of Woodway.
* Waco resident Eliska Flores received a Master of Arts from the College of Arts and Sciences at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.
* Texas State Technical College students brought home three gold, one silver and one bronze medals from the national SkillsUSA competition held in Kansas City, Mo.
Gold-medal winners were: Victor Rocha, drafting and design technology student, in the category of architectural drafting; Thomas Stewart, computer science technology student, in the category of digital game development; and Christopher Coffey, computer maintenance technology student, in the category of electronic installation and maintenance.
George Buchanan, a computer science student, snagged a silver medal in the computer programming category, and Delsia Contreras, a food service/culinary arts student from Waco, earned a bronze medal in the food and beverage service category.
Two TSTC students were selected as State of Texas SkillsUSA officers. Joedon “Sam” Delaney, a geographic information specialist student, will serve as vice president. Drafting and design technology student David Ford will take over the state historian spot.

* The following winners were crowned at the third annual Golden Oldies Dance and Contest at the West Fraternal Auditorium (click here to see photos):
Men’s best costume contest — 1st place, Harold Hyde (dressed as Elvis).
Ladies’ best costume contest — 1st place, Margie Kittrell; 2nd, Anita Allen; 3rd, Judy Bergandahl.
Couples twist contest — Lou Ann Henderson and Tommy Crockett.
Couples jitterbug contest — Russell and Jolinda D’Agostino.
* Steve Bostick, CPA, CFE and CFF, added ABV, accredited in business valuations, to his designations. He is a partner in the corporate audit division and has been a partner at Pattillo, Brown and Hill LLP since 1988.
