Waco High band achieves UIL Sweepstakes

Waco High School drum majors Hayley Simons (left) and Ariel Garcia hold the University Interscholastic League Marching Band and Sweepstakes awards won by the band. The Sweepstakes Award is the first time Waco High has won the honor since 1984, prior to consolidation. The marching band received straight Division I ratings in the fall. This spring the concert band received a Division I rating for its stage performance and Division II rating for sight reading at the UIL Region 8 Concert and Sight Reading Band Contest. The symphonic winds ensemble received Division I scores from all six judges in both stage and sight-reading performances.

Junior Girl Scouts earn Bronze Awards

Junior Girl Scouts (from left) Evan Williams, McKenzie Clafferty, Alena Bartek, Kimberly Chancellor and Kaitlyn Mitchell recently received their Bronze Award, the highest award a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. What they did to earn the award, can be found in Applause at left.

Reicher takes 1st in TAPPS district art

Reicher Catholic High School students earned 10 first-place ribbons and placed first overall at the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools district art competition. Eight schools entered more than 400 pieces of art in 20 categories. State-bound UIL musicians

Lorena High School musicians will be headed to the UIL State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin on May 31. Soloists and ensembles that won first-division ratings on Class 1 pieces in February advanced to state. Soloists who qualified for state are (above, from left) Ciara Scott (clarinet), Kelsy Melde (mallets), Josh King (snare drum), Jessica Curry (flute), Collin Brown (snare drum), Jordan Hanlin (vocalist/soprano I), Gabriel Scott (snare drum) and Charlotte Quaas (mallets).

Also competing at state is a quartet consisting of (above, from left) Jordan Hanlin (flute) Jessica Curry (flute), Lexi Wilson (clarinet) and Ciara Scott (clarinet) with their woodwind ensemble “Conversation Piece.”

Future Problem Solvers compete

Two freshman teams from Rapoport Academy’s Meyer High School qualified for and competed at the Future Problem Solvers State Bowl championship in Austin. Neither team finished in the top 10 in order to advance to the national contest. While in Austin, state Rep. Jim Dunnam’s office arranged an extended tour of the Capitol for the group.
