Mountaintop experience
Eight Boy Scouts and four adult leaders from Waco’s Boy Scouts of America Troop 308 went on a 11-day, 67-mile backpacking expedition in July at the Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, N.M. Waco Rotary Club awards scholarships to area college students
Three local college students were recently presented $1,500 checks from the Waco Rotary Club to continue their studies.
Dr. Harold Rafuse, chair of the 2011-12 Waco Rotary Club Scholarship Fund Committee, presented the checks to Breann Gilchrest, Meredith Millard and Stephanie Simcox.
Gilchrest is the daughter of Arlene and Brian Gilchrest. She graduated from McLennan Community College with a 4.0 GPA and began attending Texas State University this fall, majoring in nutrition. She plans to earn her master’s and doctoral degrees and work as a nutritionist with a special focus on proper nutrition for children.
Millard is a senior at Baylor University, majoring in international studies with a minor in art history. She has a 3.65 GPA and is the daughter of Cynthia and Michael Millard.
Simcox also is a senior at Baylor, majoring in biology with a minor in chemistry. She carries a 3.92 GPA and plans to become a genetics counselor specializing in pediatrics. She is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Simcox.
The program has awarded more than $137,000 in scholarships since the fund was created in 1955.
