A joyous occasion

The Lakeshore Estates retirement community in Waco marked Sept. 11 with a celebration of the marriage of two of its residents. Charlie Barrett and Cleo Cox, seen here at their reception, were married in front of Lakeshore Estates staff and residents in addition to family and friends. Both are in their 80s. Cleo is originally from Amarillo and was a teacher for more than 40 years. Charlie is from Waco and was a truck driver for more than 50 years. Lakeshore Estates Executive Chef Tony Portillo prepared gourmet food for the reception. Lakeshore Estates Retirement Community is at 3209 Village Green Drive.

Waco High homecoming court

Waco High’s homecoming week begins Monday. The homecoming court will be presented at Waco High’s football game against Midway on Friday night. Golden Girls shine at dance camps

The Bruceville-Eddy High School Golden Girls Dance Team returned with numerous honors from the Trinity Valley Community College Cardette Camp in Athens and the Danceline Officer Camp in Kerrville this summer. Every team member earned ribbons during the three-day TVCC camp. Pictured above are (front row, from left) Reagan Daughtry, Holly Rollings, captain Aleese Poe, Ashley Casper, (back row) Caitlin Bright, Addison Warren, 2nd Lt. Jenna Scranton, 1st Lt. Meghan Engelke, Beatris Villarreal, Maria Rodriguez and Alissa Murrey. The officers received a sweepstakes trophy and a staff award for team unity. The Golden Girl officers (photo at right) 1st Lt. Meghan Engelke, captain Aleese Poe and 2nd Lt. Jenna Scranton were selected to Danceline Elite for the second year in a row and will perform at Sea World in San Antonio on Dec. 11.

McGregor stadium flagpole dedication

McGregor ISD dedicated a new flagpole at Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 10. The base of the pole was constructed with stone from the wall at Wood Field. A plaque commemorating 100 years of McGregor football was placed at the pole’s base. The plaque, sponsored by the McGregor Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, features an etched image of the ticket booths at Wood Field. Pictured with Superintendent Kevin Houchin (third from right) are chamber members (from left) Trey Concillio, Danny Davis, chair Lauren Dreyer, Linda Shannon, John Sneed, Kyle Paschall and Terry Arp.

Lady Bear fans win at fundraiser

A quartet of avid Lady Bear basketball fans recently helped raise money for the Kay Yow/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Cancer Fund and took first place in the event. Kyle Stevens (from left), Nanette Wheelis, Kem Barrett and John Derrick represented the Lady Bear program in the 4Kay Golf Classic at Barton Creek Resort and Spa in Austin. In addition, Stevens took female longest-drive honors on the Foothills Course. The event raised more than $171,000 for women’s cancer research.
