University soccer players give back

Members of the University High School soccer teams do a number of service projects during the year. The Trojans earlier this month helped serve a Thanksgiving lunch meal at Bell’s Hill Elementary School. In the above photo, Allison Thomas (left) and Gabby Ramon serve food in the cafeteria. In the photo below, Edward Ibarra hands out meal items in the line.
On Thanksgiving Day, they will deliver meals with the Meals on Wheels program to area residents.

Midway student crowned Blinn homecoming royalty

Taylor Haliburton of Waco and Dennis Davis of Cypress were named the 2010 Blinn College homecoming queen and king at the Buccaneers’ game against Cisco College in Brenham. Haliburton, a freshman, represented the Blinn Agriculture Club. She is an agriculture major and a Midway High School graduate. Davis, a sophomore, represented the Blinn Step Team. He is a drama major and graduated from Cypress Woods High School. They were chosen by student balloting from among 20 queen and king candidates.

McGregor art students win western art contest
McGregor High School art students swept the 2010 Heart of the West Student Art Contest sponsored by the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame in Fort Worth. The art contest, which coincided with the Sixth Annual Heart of the West Exhibition and Sale, called for artwork featuring any aspect of the American West. Five entries per campus could be submitted. Art instructor Lisa Carpenter’s students took first, second and third place as well as an honorable mention. Pictured are (from left) Ranuel Suarez, third place; Chelsea Millsap, honorable mention; Brenda Sandoval, first place; and Erik Mercado, second place. Brenda’s first-place artwork becomes part of the collection of the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame. All contest winners are on display until Dec. 5 at the museum.
Scout Troop 377 awards 1st Eagle Scout

Hewitt’s Troop 377 recently advanced Joseph Dreiwitz, a Midway High School sophomore, to the rank of Eagle Scout. He is pictured with Scout leader Chris Earles at the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony. Joseph is the first Eagle Scout for the troop, which was formed in early 2009 and chartered by the First Baptist Church of Hewitt. Joseph served as the first senior patrol leader of the troop and completed his Eagle Scout Service Project, refurbishing the Lake Waco Research Area Trail this past spring. He appeared before the Eagle Board of Review this summer. The son of Jeffrey and Linda Dreiwitz, Joseph has been in scouting since 2001. Troop 377 has grown to more than 20 Scouts since its start with about a dozen boys.
Moody schools go pink

Moody Schools held a “Pinkout” the week of Oct. 25-29 to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The high school student council held a T-shirt drive while the cheerleaders had a cheer camp. Moody students raised $1,043. Those wearing pink gathered for the photo seen below. In the photo above are students (from left) Courtney Wilson, Jade Slentz, Xavier Avila, Chloe Sowers, Sarah Backus, Britanie Leatherwood and Krista Barnum.
