West Library captures state award

 

West Public Library was honored by the Texas Library Association with the Wayne Williams Project of the Year Award for the library’s Tale Tellers program. Tale Tellers is made up of teenaged volunteers who coordinate children’s storytime and its activities at the library. The program is held monthly during the school year and weekly during the summer. The Project of the Year competition is open to all Texas libraries; the award usually is won by libraries in larger cities. Tale Tellers members who accepted the award at the association’s state conference in San Antonio with librarian Nancy Hykel (right) were (from left) Melany Jean, Brianna Veselka and Amy Holocek.

Student photographers snap up honors

 

Midway High School Katie Puryear (left) and Scotti Geiger hold their awards from the 2010 Photo Contest, co-sponsored by Jostens and Wolfe’s Camera. The annual competition recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of student photographers. More information about the honor can be found in Class Acts, in Talk of the Neighborhood.

Girls State representatives

 

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 121 chose three local high school girls to attend this summer’s Girls State session. The girls are (pictured, from left) Anna Beth Fuller of Crawford High School, Anna Carr of China Spring High and Ashley Poston of Reicher Catholic High . They were given a social at the American Legion Auxiliary building and will learn more about government, citizenship and Americanism at the Girls State program this summer.

Beautiful baby winner

 

Jillian Leann Mason of West walks on the stage at the America’s Cover Miss & Cover Boy USA state beauty pageant in Dallas where she competed against babies up to 1 year old and captured the top title of “Baby Miss Division Supreme 2010.” She is the daughter of Kristie and Sam Mason. Club helps school library get books

 

The Altrusa Club of Waco presented a $500 check to South Waco Elementary so it can purchase books for the school’s library. Altrusa of Waco has been a Partner in Education with the school for several years.
