Connally One-Act Play 2nd at state

The Connally High School Theatre Department won second place at the Class 3A State University Interscholastic League One-Act Play Contest in Austin last week. Eight schools advanced to the state level. Three members of Connally’s production of Don Nigro’s “Paganini” received individual awards: Nick Glatter was named to the All-Star Cast; Kenyai O’Neal was honorable mention All-Star Cast, and Lora Claunch was Outstanding Technician. It was Connally’s second appearance at state (also in 2006), but the first time to place. Waco ISD honors Academic Achievers

Helen Hoover (left), a 10th-grader at Waco High, is joined by her guest educator Sandra Jennings, a third-grade teacher at Hillcrest PDS, at the Waco ISD’s recent Academic Achievers banquet. One hundred eighty-three 10th-, 11th- and 12th-grade students from Waco High, University High and A.J. Moore Academy each earned a cumulative grade-point average of 96.5 and received a school letter jacket and certificate at the banquet. Students were accompanied by their parents and a guest educator they chose.

A gift to fight leukemia

Midway Middle School students collected $7,248.99 during this spring’s “Pennies for Patient-Pasta for Pennies” fundraiser to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. It was the largest donation by a single school in the 46-county Central Texas region. Lifetime achievement honor

Bobby Gilliam, who retired as president of the Waco Methodist Children’s Home on March 31, was presented with a lifetime achievement award by CORE (Coalition for Residential Education) for his work with child-care agencies. At the ceremony, Gilliam (second from left) was honored by the presence of current Executive Director Scott Hart (left) from Mooseheart, where Gilliam served as executive director for three years. Also pictured (beginning at third from left) are Linda Gilliam, CORE founder and Executive Director Heidi Goldsmith, and Methodist Children’s Home Vice President for Residential Services Moe Dozier.

Applying math and science

Rapoport Academy middle school students (from left) Resha Austin, Jacquelyn Castro and Destiny Bleidt collaborate on an exercise illustrating energy conversion on a visit to the Time Warner Cable facility in Austin as part of Time Warner’s “Cracking the Code in the Digital World” program. Eagle Scout project completed

Jacob Lascsak (front row, second from right), a Life Scout with Boy Scout Troop 453 of Waco, is joined by other volunteers who helped him complete his Eagle Scout service project to install 14 trail junction signs in Cameron Park. Jacob worked on the project for six months. A total of 151.75 hours by all involved was spent on the project. Twenty-seven people, including Jacob, installed the signs on March 27. Jacob, an eighth-grader at Connally Junior High, is the son of Justin and Shelli Lascsak. His father is fourth from the left on the back row. Scoutmaster Andy McSwain is on the far left.
