Showing their spirit

 

The Waco High School dance and social officers captured several awards at the HTEDance Officer Training Camp in San Marcos held this summer. The squad received a spirit stick each night, the only one of 39 teams there to accomplish that. At the awards ceremony the squad received the Outstanding Leadership Award, Spirit Award (and a fourth spirit stick), and Best Sign Language for a sign contest. Pretty as a picture

Jillian Leann Mason of West won 11 trophies and four crowns at the Texas Sunburst State Beauty Pageant on May 28-29 in Houston. Jillian competed against 43 other children up to 14 months old from across the state. She won first place and a crown in the following categories: Prettiest Eyes, Best Costume for Rock Star Baby, Best Portfolio and Model Search Event. She took first runner-up in Western Wear and was second runner-up in six other events. She is the daughter of Kristie and Sam Mason. Her brothers are Coy and Riley Schier. Grandparents are Garry and Patricia Drews and the late Connie Drews, all from West, and Debbie and Jim Mason of Mankato, Minn. Great-grandparents are Dorothy Zahirniak of West, Lillian Mason of Mankato, Minn., and Irene and Mike Wassermann of Temple.

Rotary Club members volunteer at Victory Bowl

Members of Northwest Waco Rotary Club volunteered at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Super Centex Victory Bowl on June 12 at Waco ISD Stadium. Pictured are (from left) Levi Norwood, Coby Selke, Keith Hitt, FCA director Ben Johnson, Julian Young, Greg Evans, Fred Brown, FCA representative Elliot Johnson, Fawn Robinson, Steve Smith, Lance High and James Jackson. Northwest Waco Rotary Club supports a number of community causes each year, including the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Boy Scouts, Carter Blood Care, Arrow Child and Family Ministries, and scholarships at McLennan Community College and Texas State Technical College.

Outstanding performer honor

Nadeem Hashmi, a sophomore percussionist in the Waco High School band, earned an “Outstanding Performance” award for his solo snare drum performance at the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest in Austin. He is one of 231 students in the state to be recognized as an “outstanding performer.”

Lodge honors longtime teacher

Members of J.H. Gurley Lodge No. 337, AF&AM, present the Lamar Award of Excellence for Personal Achievement to Pat DuPree, a fifth-grade teacher at Bell’s Hill Elementary School. The lodge honored Dupree for more than 30 years of teaching service. Pictured are (from left) Carlton Pittman, Chris DeCluitt, DuPree, J. Lester Taylor and David Johnson. The award is named in honor of Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas.
