Service learning grant awarded

During a check presentation ceremony at Axtell High School, the Education Service Center Region 12 received a $99,000 grant from the State Farm Youth Advisory Board. The grant will be used to build Teen Community Emergency Response Teams (TEEN-CERT) in 10 rural communities in Central Texas that have limited access to immediate police, fire or emergency medical resources. The yearlong program will have 20 students from each district trained and some equipment will be provided. The districts participating are Axtell, Aquilla, Bynum, Chilton, Coolidge, Groesbeck, Iredell, Meridian, Mexia and Rosebud-Lott.

Meet a Kilgore Rangerette

Sydne Miller, the daughter of Barry and Tatia Miller of Waco, was named to the 71st line of the World Famous Kilgore Rangerettes. The former Midway High School Goaltender dance team officer was one of 36 girls chosen for the freshman line. The girls were selected from 107 hopefuls by outside judges, current leaders of the group, and the Rangerettes’ director and assistant director. They auditioned for a week, learning multiple routines, modeling, and participating in personal interviews.

Clifton 50-year reunion

Graduates of the Clifton High School class of 1960 gathered for their 50-year reunion this summer. Sisterly togetherness

Native Wacoan and retired teacher Alma Austin Rush (second from right) was joined by her sisters at Second Missionary Baptist Church, where she was honored by relatives and guests in celebration of her 90th birthday on July 6. Celebrating the Golden Oldies

Anita and Dale Allen (aboave photo) joined the Charles Nemec Band to sing several rock ’n’ roll oldies during the third annual Golden Oldies Dance and Contest held at the West Fraternal Auditorium.
