Looking to the future

Waco philanthropist Bernard Rapoport (seated) watches as students show him the Rapoport Academy’s Meyer High School competition robot. Rapoport discussed science, robotics and technology with the Raven Robotics team on a visit to the school. He was joined by Rapoport Foundation Executive Director Tom Stanton in presenting $50,000 to Nancy Grayson, the school’s superintendent, to be used for a scholarship fund. Five seniors — Leah Colson, Brittany Kelley, Hutch Strickland, Brian Jones and Tyler Brodeur — in Meyer High’s first graduating class qualified for the scholarships.

G.W. Carver students excel

G.W. Carver Academy’s Alexander Goodshum (left) received state recognition and qualified for the “Center” summer program, which represents the highest-scoring students in the Duke Talent Identification Program Seventh-Grade Talent Search. Zachary Hartsgrove (middle) and Michael Deyo also were state-recognized, both qualifying for the “Academy” level of the Duke TIP summer program. The boys’ recognition are based on their scores on the SAT or ACT college-entrance exam, which they were invited to take as seventh-graders.

State Special Olympics winners

These seven Midway High School students earned awards during the 41st Annual Special Olympics Texas Summer Games held at the University of Texas in Arlington. Essay winner

RileyAnn Schmunsler, a third-grade student at Robinson Elementary, poses with her teacher, Lori Killough, as she holds her award for winning first place in the annual Americanism essay sponsored by the James A. Edmond American Legion Auxiliary Unit 121 in Waco. Her essay on the theme, “What is My Patriotic Role as a United States Citizen?” also won at the state level and was sent to the national competition. U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison’s office sent RileyAnn a flag that flew over the U.S. Capitol . RileyAnn is the daughter of Theresa and Brian Schmunsler of Robinson.
