VFW Teacher of the Year award
Heidi Foster, science specialist at McGregor Elementary, receives the VFW Teacher of the Year award from McGregor VFW Post Commander Manuel Nelson. Foster is active in community activities, including Camp Fire USA and Relay for Life.

Midway senior recognized for volunteerism
Alec Sanchez, a senior at Midway High School, has received the Prudential Spirit of Community Award and the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his community service.
Alec, 18, the son of Sandra and Carlos Sanchez, of McGregor, teaches swimming and water safety skills to autistic youths at the Doris Miller Family Y through a curriculum he organized called Adaptive Aquatics.
He received a 2011 Pru-dential Spirit of Community Certificate of Excellence, which signifies Alec was among the top 10 percent of all applicants in the state in this year’s program.
Based on his 300-plus volunteer hours, Alec also qualified for the President’s Volunteer Service Award.
The presidential service honor, presented through the Corporation for National and Community Service, included a certificate and White House letter of congratulations signed by President Barack Obama.
Alec was honored for his volunteerism in November with the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy Award at the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ National Philanthropy Day luncheon.
