A Waco man was issued a citation Monday evening after he illegally set a pile of tires on fire. The fire then spread, catching brush and the side of a detached garage on fire, Waco Deputy Fire Marshal Lt. Riley Kilgo said.

Fire crews were called to the intersection of Turner and Riddle streets shortly before 6 p.m., where thick black smoke rose from the fire near the intersection. Kilgo said a 46-year-old man was burning tires on a nearby property when the fire got out of control.

Initially, fire crews began to attack the debris fire, but quickly called for additional help. Kilgo said the fire spread to catch brush and the side of a neighbor's detached garage on fire.

Kilgo said fire crews were able to extinguish the fire within the hour and found moderate damage to the garage's wall and roof. The man was issued a citation for violating a city ordinance against burning tires within the city limits.

No injuries were reported, Kilgo said. He encouraged residents to check city ordinances before burning any type of yard debris.
