Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, DuPont and the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association will offer Pasture Weed and Brush Control Field Day on Thursday at the McGregor AgriLife Extension Research Station.
The free event highlights the different agencies involved — from state agencies, researchers, education and private industries to offer the public science-based information.
Demonstration plots were cultivated to display real-world scenarios producers face to help them compare different products and application rates, among other techniques, McLennan County AgriLife Extension Agent Shane McLellan said.
McLellan said organizers plan to show off their plot work, because producers often don’t believe new methods when they only hear about it.
“What he sees, he can’t doubt,” McLellan said.
The event is available for all landowners, whether they have giant pastures or a small amount of acreage, McLellan said.
Attendees will travel from plot to plot at the research center by an air-conditioned bus. A barbecue lunch will be served after the demonstrations, DuPont range and pasture specialist Jack LeClair said.
“We have quite a lineup to cover the (topics),” LeClair said. “We’ve been putting the plots out since about this time last year.”
DuPont has been testing a new herbicide for about six years that will be shown to producers, LeClair said.
“The people on this program are the best in the Southwest,” McLellan said. “It’s very unique in itself . . . There’s probably hundreds of years experienced combined.”
Experts also will show new chemistry for brush control, primarily mesquite, but will feature other treatments on troublesome weeds like milkweed, LeClair said.
