Farm briefs, March 5, 2011: Riesel youth wins calf scramble

Riesel resident Jessica Schmedthorst (right) was one of the winners of the youth calf scramble held Feb. 4 at the San Antonio Livestock Show & Rodeo. Schmedthorst, 14, is an eighth-grader and member of the Heart of Texas 4-H Club. She was one of 12 4-H or FFA youths to win an $800 certificate that will go toward purchasing a breeding animal to exhibit in the 2012 San Antonio Junior Livestock Show. She plans to purchase a beef heifer with the certificate.


Pesticide training

Texas AgriLife Extension Service of McLennan County is offering private pesticide applicators training and testing at 420 N. Sixth St.

The event will be held on March 17 from 8 a.m. to noon, when testing will begin.

Registration is required because the class is limited to 20 people. Cost is $35.
