Almost two dozen people participated in the Central Texas Audubon Society’s annual Christmas bird count on Saturday, Dec. 31.

The Audubon Society, a national program with almost 500 local chapters, has sponsored bird counts for the past 117 years. The group split into teams before wandering throughout Central Texas.

Organizers say people have counted birds in a 15-mile circle covering Waco and the eastern part of McLennan County for more than 50 years.
