Parents and community members will be able to discuss the upcoming tax rate increase election with the Waco Independent School District board of trustees Wednesday at West Avenue Elementary School, 1101 N. 15th St., during the first of four public meetings on the tax ratification election.

The event will be at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Administrators will show a short video explaining the rate hike and what they plan to do with the $8.2 million in expected additional revenue. The public will be welcome to ask questions.

The Waco ISD board of trustees approved a 13-cent tax rate hike to the maintenance and operations rate, from $1.04 per $100 of property valuation to $1.17, and lowered the debt-service rate from 31 cents per $100 of property valuation to 23 cents for a 5-cent net tax rate increase.

The M&O increase must be approved by the voters to rise higher than $1.04 per $100 of property valuation, but the board can raise the debt-service rate without outside input.

The election is Nov. 3. Early voting begins Oct. 19.
