A Midway Independent School District crossing guard was taken to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries Monday after being hit by an SUV while pushing a child out of the way of the oncoming vehicle, Midway officials said.
The student was pushing a bicycle across an intersection after school when a black SUV turning left off Panther Way onto Hewitt Drive struck the crossing guard as she pushed the child to safety, Midway ISD spokeswoman Traci Marlin said.
The student was not injured, Marlin said.
Hewitt Police Chief Jim Devlin said the incident is still under investigation.
The crossing guard is a longtime district employee and also works in the cafeteria, Marlin said.
The crossing guard’s identity and specifics about her injuries were not available Monday night. It was not clear if the driver of the SUV was cited.
