POLICE REPORT: Wreck injures 3
When 54-year-old Helen Lykins, of China Spring, was taking her 15-year-old daughter to school Tuesday morning, troopers say she drove out in front of a Chrysler minivan, causing a collision so forceful that her Honda Accord split in two.
The impact disengaged Lykins’ seat belt, hurling her facedown into the next lane of traffic and leaving her unconscious, said Texas Department of Public Safety trooper Jason Ballew.
He said the crash occurred just before 8:15 a.m. as Lykins was turning from Tusa Lane onto Farm-to-Market 1637.
Trooper D.L. Wilson was patrolling the area and was the first to arrive on scene just before
8:15 a.m., Ballew said. The trooper said Lykins had no pulse, her daughter was going in and out of consciousness, and the driver of the minivan, 31-year-old Felicia Ferrera, of Waco, also was unconscious.
Lykins was taken by medical helicopter to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center, where she remained Tuesday evening, being treated for a broken neck, Ballew said. Her injuries did not paralyze her, he said, and she was sitting up and talking to troopers late Tuesday.
Her daughter, who Ballew declined to name because of her age, was released from Hillcrest on Tuesday afternoon.
Ferrera still was being treated at Hillcrest, but Ballew said her injuries appeared minor.
