Glasco Martin’s already been a part of one turnaround. Now he wants to be a part of another.
The 6-foot-1, 196-pound receiver has given Baylor its fifth commitment for the 2009 recruiting class after helping Round Rock Stony Point finish 9-3 last year with the school’s first trip to the playoffs.
“We’re trying to take it all the way this year,” said Martin, who was getting interest from Arkansas, UT-El Paso, North Texas and Rice in addition to an offer from the Air Force Academy. “Last year, we got over the hump. Now we’re trying to take it to state.”
Splitting time at running back and receiver, Martin hauled in 17 passes for 300 yards and three touchdowns and added 120 yards and three TDs rushing for the Tigers, who were picked last in District 16-5A last year following a 3-7 finish in 2006.
“I’m pretty comfortable at whatever position they put me at,” said Martin, who was recruited as an athlete. “I think it’s just going to be whichever one I do better.”
Martin’s offer from Baylor came after he attended a mini-camp last Friday in Waco, where he was joined by Stony Point defensive backs Julian Dozier and Kenny Browder.
“It’s always good to have the support of my teammates,” he said. “All three of us are very competitive. When we go against each other, none of us like to lose.”
Although he’s still trying to decide whether he wants to attend any other camps, Martin said he and his parents are sold on Baylor.
“I just love the coaching staff, especially the head coach,” Martin said of first-year head coach Art Briles. “I can tell that he’s going to turn the program around. That’s what I like.”
Martin joins a Baylor recruiting class that includes offensive lineman Phillip Blake from Tyler Junior College, defensive end Kelvin Palmer from Dallas Adamson, quarterback/athlete Brody Trahan from Dickinson and linebacker Tevin Elliot from Mount Pleasant.
