Chores, play can help children burn calories

About 15 percent of American children ages 6 to 19 are overweight, and almost half of young Americans ages 12 to 21 are not active on a regular basis. Over the past 30 years, the percentage of overweight children ages 6 to 11 has more than doubled, according to the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Children should be urged to start a new routine for a new year: Get active. Even moderate exercise can help.

Kids can feel the burn

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention offers this list of kid-friendly activities. Doing something from this list each day will burn about 1,000 calories per week.

• Washing and waxing a car for 45-60 minutes
• Washing windows or floors for 45-60 minutes
• Playing volleyball for 45 minutes
• Playing touch football for 30-45 minutes
• Gardening for 30-45 minutes
• Wheeling self in wheelchair for 30-40 minutes
• Walking 13/4 miles in 35 minutes (20 minutes per mile)
• Basketball (shooting baskets) for 30 minutes
• Bicycling 5 miles in 30 minutes
• Dancing fast (social) for 30 minutes
• Pushing a stroller 11/2 miles in 30 minutes
• Raking leaves for 30 minutes
• Walking 2 miles in 30 minutes (15 minutes per mile)
• Doing water aerobics for 30 minutes
• Swimming laps for 20 minutes
• Playing wheelchair basketball for 20 minutes
• Basketball (playing a game) for 15-20 minutes
• Bicycling 4 miles in 15 minutes
• Jumping rope for 15 minutes
• Running 1· miles in 15 minutes (10 minutes per mile)
• Shoveling snow for 15 minutes
• Stairwalking for 15 minutes
