POLICE NEWS: Suspect in woman's death found hiding in nearby shed in Itasca

Monday, November 09, 2009

A man arrested in the shooting death of a Valley Mills woman was discovered living in a shed near where the body was found, Hill County officials said Sunday.

The body of Kathy Todd, 60, was found about 8 p.m. Friday outside a shed near Hill County Road 4282 and Farm-to-Market Road 3147 in Itasca. A female acquaintance and the property owner, the victim’s ex-boyfriend, found the body, according to a release from the Hill County Sheriff’s Office. Todd suffered a gunshot wound to the back of the head, officials reported.

A 37-year-old Bay City man, whom Hill County officials would not identify Sunday night, remains jailed in the woman’s death.

After sheriff’s deputies started investigating the discovery of the body, a woman living on Hill County Road 4224 found the suspect in her shed. He apparently had been living there without the property owner’s permission, the release states.

Several items stolen in a burglary reported Thursday, including a rifle that Hill County officials say they think is the murder weapon, were recovered from the shed.

Sheriff Jeffrey Lyon said there were tracks leading from the murder scene to the shed where the suspect reportedly had been living, according to the release.

The man was arrested Saturday and is being held in the Hill County Jail on a charge of murder, three counts of burglary of a habitation, three counts of burglary of a building, one count of burglary of a motor vehicle and a count of felon in possession of a firearm.

A dispatcher with the sheriff’s office said Sunday night that her office would not release the suspect’s name until Monday. A Hill County Jail official would not release the man’s name or the amount of his bail.
