Waco and McLennan County residents apparently are not in a spending mood.
Waco will receive a sales tax rebate of $2.62 million for the month of November, down 5.65 percent from the $2.78 million it received for the same month last year.
Rebates received in November reflect September sales reported to the State Comptroller’s Office in October.
For the year, Waco has received rebates totaling $25.51 million, which is down 1.41 percent from last year.
A total of 19 communities in McLennan County receive sales tax rebates. They were down a combined 4 percent in November from November of last year and are down 1.17 percent for the year.
Picking up a pink Cadillac
Amie Kelly, 39, turns a lot of heads while driving around town in her pink Cadillac.
“I was downtown the other day, and a couple of guys in a parking lot pointed at me and said, ‘Good job,’ ” Kelly said, adding she does indeed have a good job — or, more accurately, a good career.
The Waco woman started with Mary Kay Inc. nearly 11 years ago and has worked her way up to a director’s position in the direct-sale cosmetics company. She has about 700 clients all over the United States and leads a team of 150 women, most of whom live in Central Texas.
Through sales and team-building, she has won the use of eight pink “career” cars. This is her second pink Cadillac, a 2010 model that she picked up at Richard Karr Motors about two weeks ago. She may use it for two years.
“The pink Cadillac is our ultimate, most recognizable symbol of achievement,” said Gary Jinks, senior vice president of sales for the Dallas-based company. He added that about 1,200 are on the road today.
Kelly is a Baylor University graduate who retired from teaching in 2002.
Game Crazy is closing
The Game Crazy store at 5201 Bosque Blvd. is among 200 nationwide that will close.
A liquidation sale already has begun there, with prices slashed by 50 percent.
Sources say other Game Crazy locations on Hewitt Drive and in Bellmead will remain open.
Workplace travel survey
The Texas Department of Transportation soon will begin a travel survey meant to gather information on how people get to and from different types of businesses.
Area businesses will be randomly contacted by phone and invited to take part in this survey.
The purpose of this survey is to help local and state officials in deciding:
* Where new roads and transit service should be planned.
* What existing roads and transit routes should be improved.
* Which roadway projects being considered for the next few years will be of greatest benefit to the residents of the city of Waco and McLennan County.
TxDOT and the Metropolitan Planning Organization are developing a computer model of major roadways in the city and county to help in setting priorities for transportation projects.
