Attorney enters not guilty plea for woman accused in Ponzi scheme

Friday, October 23, 2009

The attorney for the 68-year-old Whitney woman accused of scheming people out of at least $500,000 entered a plea of not guilty Thursday in federal court.

Bill Johnston, Julia Ann Schmidt’s Waco-based attorney, entered the plea in U.S. magistrate Judge Jeffrey C. Manske’s court to waive an arraignment hearing that was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

Schmidt was not booked into jail but surrendered to Federal Bureau of Investigation officials Friday, when she learned there was a warrant for her arrest, a court spokeswoman said.

She is out of jail on a personal recognizance bond.

The case is being transferred to the district clerk’s office, where a set of pretrial hearings will be scheduled.

I feel your anger and totally understand it. I too am totally angered, shocked, and disgusted at what she has done.
But.. one thing is very clear.... None of you really know her or her history or her family. I DO ... I do not excuse one thing she has done. I personally know of over $100,000 shes taken from friends on bad loans, one being an elderly woman near 90 living alone on SS. Tell me I"m not angery about that! Find out her family story before throwing to many stones. There is always more to the picture.

This hag ROBS people out of hundreds of thousands of dollars and get out on personal recognizance? Are they kidding???? Is this low life scum of the Earth an example of the upper class in Whitney? This just proves that JUSTICE IS NOT BLIND, but in fact is racially and socially biased. I can only guess the bond if she were a black man who did the same thing. I bet he wouldn't be out on personal recognizance.

This is not fair at all. She has ripped off people & still gets out on personal recognizance what a crock. Of all the people she sure had the money for bail somewhere to the tune of 500,000. I thinks that orange junpsuit just might be becoming on her. She can fool a few friends & family but certainly not the majority. This has not been her first rodeo.
