POLICE NEWS: Man accused of road rage had pipe bombs, authorities say

Thursday, October 15, 2009

A Waco man who police say shot at another car in a fit of road rage Tuesday afternoon was also carrying a machete and two pipe bombs, authorities said.

William Scott Bartlett, 48, was driving a 2000 Ford F-150 pickup south on Interstate 35 at about 3 p.m. when he began tailgating a 1992 Oldsmobile Cutlass sedan, Waco police spokesman Steve Anderson said.

Bartlett then pulled up next to the car and made an obscene gesture at the driver, who slowed down, Anderson said.

Bartlett again pulled up alongside the driver, this time brandishing a black pistol, Anderson said.

As Bartlett exited into Lacy-Lakeview, the other driver heard a pop and, on further inspection, saw that his car had been shot in the front right quarter panel, Anderson said.

The driver was not injured, Anderson said.

Lacy-Lakeview police officers who stopped Bartlett found a pistol, a machete and two PVC pipe bombs in Bartlett’s truck, as well as a “leafy green substance” later determined to be marijuana, Anderson said.

The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office bomb unit disposed of the pipe bombs, Anderson said.

Bartlett was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a prohibited weapon/explosives, two counts of carrying an unlawful weapon and possession of marijuana. His bonds totaled $30,000.

Bartlett bonded out of McLennan County Jail on Wednesday, a jail spokeswoman said.

What a way to set an example for your children. This guy should get another charge for being an careless idiot, he has no respect for guns, safety or human life. Drop the pipe bombs keep the feds out it. Let the state put him were he needs to be. AG assult w/deadly weapon(felony 1 or 2). Drugs, weapons and discharging a firearm at someone. This is how innocent people get killed. couple of felonys and misdemeanors . I agree the bond was too low,but the D A and Judge could stack the time. throw CC out the window.

The ALLEGED PIPE BOMBS that were mentioned in the story were in fact 1 and a half inch home made FIRE CRACKERS. The so called leafy green substance was a roach, not a bag full of dope like they would want you to think. I don't believe for one minute that Mr. Bartlett would shoot at any one or anything, if there was a chance that someone would be hurt. He has too much respect for guns and gun safety. Shame on The Waco Trib and Shame on Channel 25 and any other news organization for not checking in to this story and getting the facts correct. Gee, that wouldn't make for a very interesting story though, would it.

Did anyone stop to think that the reason the bonds were so low is because it is not true? Since when has the media ever reported the God given truth? Innocent until proven guilty.

It depends on the officer how he writes up the arrest for a person and how honest the officer is when writting his report and who influnced him the most. There are so meny crocked people and officers as well as to how the Judge sets the bond. As to the drugs that is why people don't use good sence, think about it. There needs to be drug help for the ones who want it and as to prison that don't help.Espically when the help is carring DRUGS into the prisons. Its like a merry-go- round.Every one pays if it's here or on the other side.

I don't believe him believing in Ted Nugent has anything to do with this. That is not a very good assumption. I'm pretty sure Uncle Ted would not do the same as this man.

Robbie,

Our jails are overcrowded because we house people on drug convictions. Thats right, a crime against yourself is more important jail time than that against another person in our nation. SHEEESH! 75% of the jail population are drug convictions, WAKE UP!

Remember people this is McClennan county If he had dine this in Bell County it would have been twice that amount. I have been watching this for a while and the bail is ALWAYS higher in Bell County.
