A pregnant woman was killed late Tuesday in Hamilton County when she was thrown from the bed of a moving pickup that was struck by an 18-wheeler.
Heather Smith, 18, of Lampasas, and her unborn baby were pronounced dead just after 9:30 p.m. on State Highway 22 and Farm-to-Market Road 1602, near Hamilton, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokeswoman said.
Around 8:30 p.m., the 1997 Ford pickup was traveling northeast on State Highway 22, and an 18-wheeler driven by Adalberto Marquez, of Clovis, N.M., was driving behind, the spokeswoman said.
The pickup’s driver signaled his intent to turn left onto F.M. 1602, and Marquez attempted to pass the pickup in a no-passing zone and struck the pickup’s rear quarter panel, she said.
Five people were injured in the crash, but their conditions were not available late Wednesday. Marquez was cited for passing in a no-passing zone, the spokeswoman said, and more citations were pending.
