Rosebud police said Wednesday that the fire that damaged a house Tuesday was not caused by a bomb after all.
Sonney Perez, 39, allegedly used a flammable substance to start a fire at the home, located at 201 S. Third St., said Rosebud Police Chief Jeremiah Shults. Police initially said the fire was started by a bomb detonated remotely by an MP3 player.
On Tuesday afternoon, Shults approached the home to arrest Perez in connection with a threat against Perez’s estranged wife when he heard someone in the house yell, “I’m not coming out alive,” he said. A short time later, Shults heard two shots fired inside the house, followed by a fiery explosion that burst out the front windows, he said.
Shults chased Perez a few blocks and arrested him, he said. No one was injured in the fire.
Perez remained in the Falls County Jail late Wednesday, held in lieu of $795,000 bond on charges of criminal trespassing, arson, evading arrest and detention, and terroristic threat, a jail official said.
Shults said the Texas Department of Public Safety, the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting in the fire investigation.
Tuesday’s incident wasn’t Perez’s first brush with the law.
In 1991, Perez was convicted in Bell County of two counts of burglary of a building. In 1993, he was convicted in Tarrant County for aggravated sexual assault of a child, according to DPS. For his crimes, he was incarcerated twice for a total of nearly six years, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
Perez was arrested in Rosebud last month for evading arrest and detention, but was released on $2,500 bond.
Perez has used four aliases, including Tiger Perez and Bart Man Perez, according to DPS.
