A Waco man died and another man was in serious condition after a head-on collision in Freestone County.
The accident happened about 10:15 p.m. Friday on U.S. Highway 84 about a mile west of Fairfield, a Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman said.
Ocie High, 32, a soldier at Fort Bragg in North Carolina, was driving west in a 2007 Jeep and passing cars in a no-passing zone when an oncoming pickup saw his vehicle coming on the wrong side of the road and braked to a stop, the DPS spokesman said. A 2002 Chevrolet pickup driven by Jorge Luis Maldonado, 42, of Waco, swerved onto the right shoulder to avoid running into the back of the stopped pickup.
Maldonado’s pickup collided head-on with the Jeep, which also had moved onto the shoulder, the spokesman said.
Maldonado was pronounced dead at 12:24 a.m. Saturday at East Texas Medical Center in Fairfield. High was taken by helicopter to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, where he was listed in serious condition, the spokesman said.
