Matt Baker

By Tommy Witherspoon

Tribune-Herald staff writer

Former Baptist minister Matt Baker is back in McLennan County after being transferred Friday to the county jail from the Kerr County Jail.

  More Matt Baker coverage

Baker, 37, was booked into the McLennan County Jail at 7:35 p.m., a jail spokeswoman said, and was still being held on a $500,000 bond. He was indicted on a murder charge Wednesday in the April 2006 death of his 31-year-old wife, Kari, a teacher and the mother of his two daughters, and surrendered to Kerr County officials Thursday afternoon.

Baker is expected to remain jailed at least until a hearing Wednesday, when his attorney, Richard Ellison, of Kerrville, will ask 19th State District Judge Ralph Strother to reduce his bond.

Baker, who has denied the allegations, and his two daughters have been living with his parents in Kerrville since shortly after his wife’s death, which initially was ruled a suicide by sleeping—pill overdose.

Hewitt police, Texas Rangers and the district attorney’s office reopened the case at the urging of Kari Baker’s parents, Linda and James Dulin, who do not believe their daughter committed suicide.

The indictment against Baker alleges he gave her drugs and then suffocated her with a pillow. Officials say Baker then tried to make her death appear to be a suicide.

Hewitt police found a typed, unsigned note near her bed that they initially believed to be a suicide note.

Baker’s daughters will remain with his parents in Kerrville, Ellison has said.

Cynthia can you tell me why you are basically hijacking this story to spout your own? I don't really understand the connection of the Baker family and this minister who stands accused and is in Hewitt County with Hewitt PD? If your case has sufficient evidence it can be reopened, but if you have nothing new to add and only wish to slam the PD over what did or didn't, may or may not have happened, well you're spitting into the wind. THIS story is NOT the place to climb up on that soapbox hon, go to the press, present what you have, see if THEY think it's a story... you know media will make a story out of anything! If they say it's nothing, then it's nothing and you need to seek a grief counselor so you can can move forward.

One can't just be an investigator. You have to go to school to become an investigator! Duh!
You have no idea of what I have been through over the last 3+ years, viewing the crime scene photos, learning basic forensics, so I could understand the autopsy report, asking questions of McGregor PD, to which I get conflicting answers.......from two different chiefs of police........
If you want to contact me personally, please do so: welovejoshua@yahoo.com

Hi Cynthia,

People can call you crazy all they want, but if it were me, I wouldn't give up either. Nobody understands this until they have encountered it themselves. My encounter with this sort of thing was minor compared to yours, merely a highly unethical matter. When you witness firsthand how the authorities, even judges, will tell lies in order to protect their own, it is frightening. We expect these people to hold themselves to a higher standard than the rest of the population, but the reality is that they are just as human as everyone else.

The authorities don't want to investigate themselves. Your best hope is to get press coverage. That Texas Monthly article probably did wonders for this Baker case. Your other hope is that if there was wrongdoing, one of the parties involves will have a conscience and come forward - perhaps like the girlfriend in this Baker case.

There is a website called Women in Crime Ink with very impressive writers. They look for stories to write about and in some cases, it has resulted in investigations being re-opened. They have a chatline you can post on and you might be able to get someone interested in it. Maybe.

Good luck.

When it comes to a death scene, if it smells like fish, then something is fishy! Hmmm ... I'm not saying this sack-of-crap "minister" is guilty, but he's got a lot of explaining to do!! Repeated allegations of sexual harrassment at various churches, missing computer at home (right before the police arrived), hard to believe statment of events on night of death, no emotion in 911 call, Google searches for overdose, switching of computers at church office, contradictory statements in 20/20 interview, crushed pills in briefcase (with another weak excuse that kids put it there) ... oh, and you want a motive - he blatently shows us that he was cheating on his wife by going shopping for a ring with his girlfried right after his wife's death!! Oh - he's not "guilty" ... yet! Worse part is how is parents are trying to get everyone to overlook all this fishy smell, and convincing the good people of Kerrville to give them money for his defense fund ... Hey parents - tell us what you did with Matt's computer and the computer printer before we give you a dime of help!!!

Ditto on the Hewitt P.D., they are only good at giving traffic tickets to people doing 32 in a 30 mile per hour zone. Total gestapo cops. They need to disband completely.

Can someone/anyone explain how 'urging' the police and Texas Rangers to reopen a case works???
I have asked non-stop for my son's case to be reopened, I have asked the Texas Rangers to investigate Joshua's death and/or McGregor PD. I was denied several times over the course of 2 years by ex-Ranger, Steve Foster/Company F/Waco.........NOW Chief of Police/McGregor.
I was told the 'first jurisdiction', which is McGregor PD must request the Rangers help, but this isn't true, according to their website!
I have gotten contradictory answers from 2 different chiefs of police/McGregor, concerning aspects of Joshua's case. Which one is lying????
Since my son's death was NEVER investigated the first time, I can't understand why ONE investigation could hurt anything!!!
There is no etiological specific disease/injury on the autopsy to explain his death. THIS alone should give ample cause to reopen the investigation.
I already know that there is a witness that saw the police murder my son. This person is too scared to come forward.
Elements of a crime: Motive, Means, and Opportunity. The only suspect that fits the bill is the McGregor police department.
McGregor can call me Crazy all they want, and NO, I'm not a homicide investigator/forensic pathologist, but I would make a darn good one!
