Ruth Mims Holly, of Tennessee Colony, will celebrate her 101st birthday Sunday at the home of one of her three daughters in Waco.

Ruth was born March 4, 1917, in Tennessee Colony near Palestine. She was one of three children born to Dennis and Pearl (Casel) Mims.

She married Charlie Holly on Jan. 26, 1938, and they lived in the Bethel community, where they raised their seven children and a granddaughter. Ruth has been a member of the New Hope Baptist Church in Tennessee Colony for 80 years, serving as an usher, deaconess and “Mother of the Church.”

Her husband died in 1998. They had been married 60 years. Their oldest son, Charlie, was killed in the Vietnam War in 1966.

Other children are Selma Neal, Elma Hicks and Juanita Johnson, all of Waco; Glenda Thomas, of Delaware; Ethel Williams, of DeSoto; and Donald Holly, of Tennessee Colony. Granddaughter Mary Beck lives in Waco.

She also has an aunt, Beatrice Johnson, who is 108 and lives in Oklahoma.
