Class acts

A number of local students recently received their degrees from the Western Governors University online program. The university held a commencement ceremony at the Frank Erwin Center in Austin on Sept. 30.

Kathleen Shannon-Houp, of Waco, Master of Science in nursing — leadership and management.

Sara Abebe, of Waco, Bachelor of Science in nursing.

Donald LaForce, of Waco, Master of Science in information security and assurance.

Susan Schaumburg, of Waco, Master of Science in nursing — leadership and management.

Dana Dinsmore, of Waco, Master of Science in nursing — education.

Phillip Walton, of Woodway, Master of Arts in teaching in elementary education.

Dayakar Doddala, of Waco, graduated with a Master of Science degree in computer and information science at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, Arkansas.

In the military

Pvt. 1st Class Taylor Athey, 20, of Hewitt, graduated from United States Marine Corps boot camp at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego on Oct. 13.

Athey, a Midway High School graduate, completed 13 weeks of intensive basic training at MCRD San Diego as one of 480 recruits in India Co. / Platoon 3205. Following 10 days home on leave he will report to Camp Pendleton for one month of Marine combat training then attend Military Occupation Specialty School.

He is the son of Cheryl Athey, of Hewitt, and Charles Athey, of Hewitt.
