The Waco Police Department arrested 24 suspected “johns” in an undercover prostitution sting that utilized social media to track down offenders.
Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said the “increase in the use of social media to facilitate” prostitution led members of the department’s Drug Enforcement Section, who conducted the sting during the past week, to use social media to set up meetings with the johns, a term referring to a person who solicits prostitutes.
All 24 individuals arrested were males offering money to undercover officers for sex, Swanton said.
Twenty-one of the men were charged with attempted prostitution and are eligible to attend a “john school” later this month to mitigate their potential punishment.
The other three aren’t eligible for the class and were charged with prostitution, according to the sergeant.
