Cameron Park Zoo welcomed the newest member to its family with the birth of a baby boy orangutan at 12:28 p.m. Thursday, officials said in a press release.

Mei, a Bornean orangutan, gave birth to her baby as the zoo’s primate staff, veterinarian, a Waco OB-GYN and Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center neonatal intensive care unit nurses were present.

Mother Mei and her baby, who does not have a name yet, are reportedly doing well, and staff reported that the newborn started nursing three minutes after birth.

The newest addition to the primate family is the son of Mei, an 18-year-old orangutan, and Kerajaan, or KJ, a 27-year-old male orangutan. Both Mei and her baby will remain in the night house in order to give the pair time to bond, according to the press release. The zoo will announce when the baby will be able to be seen through the nursery window.

Primate staff will post baby pictures and updates on the zoo’s Facebook page at
