A week before filing ends for the May 5 local city and school elections, a third candidate for Waco City Council’s District 1 seat threw his hat in the ring Friday.

Luis Mike Guevara, an operations manager at Poppa Rollo’s Pizza, joins nonprofit director Andrea Barefield and retiree Cecil McDowell in seeking the seat currently held by Noah Jackson Jr.

The council appointed Jackson to the seat last summer to fill out the term of deceased Councilman Wilbert Austin, but Jackson is not seeking to run for a full term.

District 1 encompasses East Waco and also includes McLennan Community College, Texas State Technical College and far South Waco, where Guevara lives.

Mayor Kyle Deaver has also filed for a second two-year term and has not yet drawn an opponent. District 3 Councilman John Kinnaird, a trust officer, is also unopposed as he seeks a third term.

J.B. Smith is the the Tribune-Herald managing editor. A native of Sulphur Springs, he attended Southwestern University and joined the Tribune-Herald in 1997. He and his wife, Bethany, live in Waco and have two children.
