Greater Waco-area supermarket leader H-E-B has launched a new mobile app that will allow its customers to create digital shopping lists, retrieve digital coupons, look up recipes and manage personal prescription schedules.

“We’ve listened to what our customers want and developed app features that will give them the time and money savings they count on from H-E-B,” said Winell Herron, vice president of public affairs and diversity. “We intend to give our customers a great mobile experience, and we’re looking forward to sharing even more app innovations in the future.”

The app is available for download from Apple iTunes and the Google Play. It also coincides with a refresh for www.heb.com.

Digital Shopping List is one of the features of the new app. Shoppers can build a list; check to see if a product is carried in a particular store; identify where in the store the product is located by aisle and shelf; and save time by sequencing the shopping list according to store layout.

Hundreds of coupons will become available on the mobile app, and customers can sign up to be notified of digital coupons by a text message.

Coupons can be redeemed with a mobile phone number or PIN at checkout.

H-E-B is expanding its online product catalog to include images, product descriptions, nutritional facts and more. It is expanding its recipe database, “with every recipe chef-tested and approved,” H-E-B said. Customers can use the new app or heb.com to search for recipe ideas based on prep time, cooking method, cuisine type or ingredients.

Another kudo

Freddie Kish’s Complete Car Care Center, 5300 Franklin Ave., was recently chosen the Federated “Shop of the Year,” and owners Freddie and Jeanna Kish appear on the cover of the March-April edition of Shop Owner magazine.

The publication devotes several pages and photographs to tell the story of the Car Care Center’s rise from its beginnings to a collector of several awards, including the Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics given by the local office of the Better Business Bureau.

It details Freddie’s 10-week stay in the hospital, four of them in ICU, just as business was beginning to take off. It discusses the F4 tornado that ravaged parts of Waco in May 2006, tearing the roof off the Kishes’ shop and leveling the front office, leaving $1 million in damage for the couple to overcome.

“I call the tornado, ‘God’s remodeling plan,’ ” Jeanna Kish said in the article.

She said it turned into a blessing in disguise because it necessitated a complete change in the layout of the shop that has contributed to its success.

Inside opening

Sephora will open a shop in the J.C. Penney store at Richland Mall.

The first 100 customers to show up Friday at the grand opening will receive gift cards with values up to $100. Sephora also is giving away 750 gift bags filled with samples.

“We are excited to introduce ‘Sephora inside J.C. Penney’ to the Waco community,” said Ana Gonzales, beauty manager. “Sephora is the world’s best international beauty concept, and customers will enjoy having a diverse collection of popular and cutting-edge brands of makeup, skin care, fragrance, bath and beauty accessory products at their fingertips.”

The 2,200-square-foot shop is found at the center of the store.

Sephora, a French brand and chain of cosmetics stores, was founded in Paris in 1970 and opened its first U.S. store in New York City in 1998.

In October 2006, it began opening boutiques inside J.C. Penney outlets, offering some of the same makeup, skin care and fragrances as it does in stand-alone stores. Sephora’s Richland Mall location is its 515th to open at J.C. Penney stores.
