This year’s Brazos Forum will have the theme “Seaport Cities — Then and Now,” beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the SBC Theater in the Mayborn Museum, 1300 S. University Parks Drive.

The forum has changed to a one-day event, with presentations about American colonial port cities; Salem, Massachusetts; and Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama.

At noon, soprano Bronwen Forbay will perform songs associated with U.S. seaport cities. A luncheon follows on the mezzanine of the Mayborn.

Midway ISD Distinguished Alumni

The Midway ISD Alumni Network will recognize 2017 Distinguished Alumni Jim King, Class of 1975, and Distinguished Service honorees during a brief presentation at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Midway Middle School cafeteria.

A brief reception will follow the presentation. Distinguished Service honorees are Glynn Dell and Bennie Ballew, Jerry and Sherilyn Lewis, David Vardeman and Sharron Zachry.

Bee-friendly gardening

Master Gardeners will be on hand Saturday at the Downtown Farmers Market to discuss bee friendly gardening, with an emphasis on the importance of cultivating year-round flowing native plants.

The Alta Vista Neighborhood Association will have its biannual neighborhoodwide garage sale Friday, Saturday and Sunday. If you are in the Alta Vista Neighborhood Association boundaries you do not have to get a permit to have a garage sale that weekend.

John Kinnaird, chairman of the McLennan County Appraisal Board, will present a program titled “An Examination of Current Property Appraisal/Tax Environment in McLennan County,” during the Waco Rotary Club weekly meeting at noon Monday at the Lion’s Den, 1716 N. 42nd St.
