Letter from State Rep. Doc Anderson to chancellors, regents of Big 12 Texas universities

System Chancellors and members of the Board Of Regents:

With regard to the quickly changing world of intercollegiate athletic alignments, I appreciate your taking the time to properly and prudently assess the options before you.  It is the position of this office, other members of the House and Senate, and the countless number of Texans affected by your decisions that no institution of higher learning in Texas needs to decide this matter in the relative haste which has governed others similarly situated.

As you may have heard, the House Committee on Higher Education is scheduled to meet Wednesday, June 16th in Austin for the purpose of a public discussion of conference alignments.  It is expected that this forum will be an opportunity for the voices of thousands of potentially affected Texans to be heard by the officials they expect to hold accountable for any decisions you make.

I respectfully request that you postpone any decisions on athletic conference alignment until legislators have had a chance to meet on this issue.  Our constituents have made it clear that they expect us to work together with you in order to preserve the historical alliances which remain for Texas universities.

Texans have watched before as their resident intercollegiate athletic programs were split up into different conferences, and these historical alliances were negligently tossed aside.  I would appreciate your consideration and possible participation in the hearing process.

Doc AndersonThanks for all that you do.

Sincerely,

Charles "Doc" Anderson
State Representative, District 56
McLennan County

This whole ugly mess seems to be bringing up a lot of the long-simmering, nasty stuff between schools that helped sink the Southwest Conference to begin with. With bad blood like this, maybe it is best if A&M and Baylor go off in their own directions after all.

I'm a horned frog fan and I have a historical (family) relationship to Baylor. I've always pulled for the Bears. At the same time, I would no more want them in my conference than I would want Liberty University. Your choice of Starr as President says it all. You probably don't even allow Geologists to teach evolution or the truth about climate change.

Karma, when you say "you" I'm not sure to whom you are referring, but I hope it isn't me. I had a HUGE problem with the break up of the SWC. I was dead set against it, yet it happened anyway. Now, I understand that the schools that didn't get the invite to the Big 12 all blame Baylor for it. UH feels it would have been them, TCU, Rice and I've even heard SMU folks saying that Baylor kept them out. If I recall, the last team out was BYU. So even if Baylor had not been invited, TCU, SMU, UH and Rice would all be exactly where they are today anyway.

Karma. Baylor was a far superior football team and much more successful in other sports when the SWC was disbanded. TCU has benefited greatly from a weak schedule and would be in the same boat as BU if they were in Big 12. Baylor football has struggled the last decade but the rest of their athletic dept is one of the most successful in the country. And ur in for a huge surprise when the football team plays TCU this season. mark my words.

The vindictiveness of the TCU people is just staggering. Because of some perceived slight 15 years ago, they are now actively working to keep Baylor out of the MWC. Tell me how this is in TCU's interest? If Karma is coming around to haunt Baylor, just remember that it will someday be back at the Frogs' doorstep as well. As for the Bears, I think they should stop wasting their time trying to keep the other TX schools in the Big 12 and either A.) work with the remaining "leftover" schools to see about bringing some new teams into the league, or B.) be pushing REALLY hard to join the Big East. The Big East is mainly a basketball league, and the Bears have the cred for that.

Complete and utter hypocrisy. You didn't have a problem tossing TCU, SMU, Rice and UH aside when Baylor took the Big XII bid it didn't deserve. TCU & Baylor had the longest standing continuous football rivalry at the time (over 100 years) which immediately ended. You have been cashing $7 million checks for the last 10 years, have a tremendous advantage when recruiting against these former SWC schools, yet your football program is worse than TCU and UH, probably in line with SMU and just a hair above Rice during that period. Enjoy your new membership in Conference USA or the MAC.
