Cullar pulls his name off Dist. 22 ballot; Birdwell to run alone

A day after his legal challenge to State Sen. Brian Birdwell’s eligibility ran into a brick wall in the Dallas Court of Appeals, Waco Democrat John Cullar announced today he’s withdrawing from the November election.
Cullar maintained his belief that Birdwell doesn't meet a five-year state requirement to serve in the senate but said that without a way to pull Birdwell off the ballot and given the conservative nature of the senate district his remaining a candidate would distract and divert resources from other Democratic campaigns in the region.
