McLennan County sheriff’s deputies and agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are investigating after a body was discovered in the back seat of a burning Cadillac sedan this morning, according to authorities.

The victim appears to be an adult, but the identity, age and gender is not known at this time, because the body was burned beyond recognition.

It is not known at this time whether foul play was involved.

A woman called 9-1-1 after driving up on the scene in the 400 block of Eastland Lake Road, southeast of the Waco city limits, at 6:55 a.m., McLennan County Chief Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Plemons said.

When sheriff’s deputies and volunteers with the Robinson and Downsville fire departments arrived on the scene, the car was still in flames, he said, but it “was very evident that there was a body in the back seat of the car.”

The corpse has been sent to the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas for an autopsy.

Investigators, meanwhile, are working on how the car caught fire and where it came from, Plemons said.

The Cadillac — a dark blue or black four-door, possibly a CTS — still has dealer plates. It did not appear to have been in a wreck.

Authorities are checking the vehicle identification number, the chief deputy said.

Although foul play is not necessarily suspected, it cannot be ruled out until results of the autopsy and the forensic analysis of the car are completed.

“We’re not sure this vehicle is even from this area,” Plemons said. “We don’t know if this was something accidental in nature, something mechanical... or if it was something intentionally done.”

Authorities are asking that anyone who saw the car before the fire, or who may have any information about the identity of the victim, to immediately call the sheriff’s office at 757-5117.
