An 84-year-old who was shot in the chest and abdomen by a Hill County deputy Tuesday afternoon remained hospitalized this morning, according  to officials.

There were conflicting reports regarding his condition.

The man, whose name has not been released, is accused of attacking and attempting to disarm 26-year-old Deputy Emily Wright when she responded to the man’s home in the 400 block of Farm-to-Market Road 2960 on a call for service, said Chief Deputy Steve Girsh.

An investigation into the incident by the Hill County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers is ongoing, he said. The name of the man will likely not be released until later today, he added.

According to the chief deputy, Wright responded to the man’s residence at about 3:09 p.m. after he called authorities to report suspicious activity in his home.

When Wright, who has worked at the department for a little more than a year, arrived at the residence, the man met her at the door with a .22-caliber rifle, Girsh said.

After Wright convinced him to put the gun down, he attacked her, trying to take her service weapon and then hitting her in the face and trying to choke her, Girsh said.

Wright attempted to use her Taser to subdue the man, but wasn’t able to effectively use it in the midst of the struggle, according to the chief deputy. She shot him twice, once in the abdomen and once in the chest, officials said.

The 84-year-old man was flown to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. The deputy was taken to a local hospital, where she was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries that included facial bruising and a “busted lip,” Girsh said.

Deputies found no evidence of the suspicious activity the man phoned in, according to the chief deputy. There is no immediate indication that Wright acted inappropriately, he added.
