Waco City Council member Jim Bush first to throw name into ring for mayor
By J.B. Smith Tribune-Herald staff writer
Waco City Council member Jim Bush said Thursday that he will run to replace outgoing Mayor Virginia DuPuy, becoming the first candidate to announce in the May 8 city election.
Bush, 67, a commercial builder who has been on the council since 2005, said he wants to carry on the same direction as DuPuy, who must step down in May because of term limits.
Filing begins Monday in that race and in Districts 1 and 3.

“I’m going to have big shoes to fill, but I look forward to trying,” Bush said. “My philosophy and Mayor DuPuy’s philosophy are very similar.”
Bush said he wants to continue the momentum the city has gained in recruiting more high-wage jobs and developing downtown and the river corridor. He said he also wants to continue DuPuy’s emphasis on improving education at all levels.
Bush, who lives in the Lake Air neighborhood, represents sprawling District 5, which includes West Waco, the U.S. Highway 84 corridor and much of China Spring.
Bush is halfway through his third term. If he wins the mayoral seat, the council would appoint a replacement to fill out his remaining year.
Bush owns Bush Construction Consultants, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who were also Waco builders. He is a member of numerous civic and city boards and is on the National League of Cities economic development board.
He and his wife, Marty, have two adult children and eight grandchildren.

wondering how many times Mr Bush reached out to his constituents he represents to see what he could do to better represent his own district, and the people that already live in Waco, not those he wants to bring in. If I remember correctly he had egg on his face when they tried to sell park property to a developer- had not even been to a neighborhood assoc meeting, didn't even know his district had one. So I wonder who he will really represent as mayor, current citizens of Waco, or Dallasites he wants for their money? And who is supposed to protect the hords of people he would want to bring to Waco, our PD of all of 125 officers, 12 on the streets at any given time? Hmmm...
Jim Bush wants to "momentum the city has gained in recruiting more high-wage jobs". The only "high-wage" job I've seen is the consultant for Imagine Waco who got $300,000 to come up with what Waco should look like in the future. Oh wait...that company is from Portland, OR. We need someone young and intelligent with fresh ideas for Waco. I think that Michael Simon would be an excellent choice. Let's try to convince him to run.
Mr. Bush better watch out....i might just decide to file for mayor too! LOL.
I get a lot of comments deleted, but oh well. It's not the end of the world. As far as this article, This guy Bush said he wants to carry on the same as Mayor Dupuy??? There needs to be new ideas in Waco. Not more of the same. This is 2010, not 1980. Maybe some sharp, bright, open-minded young buck will step up with some vision. I would, but I smell a relocation in my future.
What will we do without that platinum-blonde page-boy? Maybe move into the 21st century?
From what I've read and seen, the whole City Council needs to be replaced Period!!
the only story the trib will run are in order with its owner's political agenda. so sad mr robinson!!
God help us if we elect someone who wants to follow in DuPuy's shoes. I guess that would mean more theft of taxpayer money (Margaret Mills) and waste of taxpayer money (Texas Ranger Museum) and no telling how many other examples that have not come to light. It's time to put an end to business as usual at City Hall. DuPuy, don't let the door hit you on the way out and take Bush and your other cronies with you!
Ron, Red Dog, Jim H. and Susan have very good points. Get rid of them all, bust up the good old boy/gal system. Start over with fresh new ideas. Lets hear more about this Toby Marie Walker. If Bush thinks he has big shoes to fill then that means DuPuy only has big feet. Try hat size, a squirrel could fit her hat size.
The only way to change the city manager and staff is to elect a completely new Mayor and council. Then they might look for a new one or maybe not. The Mayor has become more than the figurehead it used to be. As expected, as we progress through different Mayors (elected at large), they gain a little more influence each time. The voters have the power to break up the "good old boys club" as long as they don't elect a new one to replace it.
Toni Herbert for Mayor!!!
Bush do ever one a big favor GO THE HELL AWAY AND STAY GONE..
The Mayor is for all practical purposes a figure head position only. The change need to be at City Manager (Larry Groth) and Bill Falco.
I like to see run for Mayor of Waco Toby Marie Walker. We need a positive change in leadership here in Waco and Toby would bring new way of thinking to the city. Toby has the business experience necessary to be a great Mayor. Time to change and break up the "good old boys club".
In My Opinion ...
