Vigil to remember 9/11 victims to be held in Waco tonight
By Mike Copeland Tribune-Herald staff writer
A candlelight vigil to unite Christians, Jews, Muslims, Hindus and members of the Baha’i faith is scheduled from 7 to 8 tonight at the Islamic Center of Waco, 2725 Benton Drive.
Center president Al Siddiq said the vigil is meant to remember the nearly 3,000 victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. Today is the ninth anniversary of those attacks.
Siddiq said he hopes the vigil serves as a time of healing as debate continues about whether an Islamic center and mosque should be built near the site where Muslim extremists attacked the World Trade Center.
He said he has sent e-mail messages to local religious leaders urging them to come and bring their congregations. He said he has been encouraged by their responses.
