State's top politicians not making pitch to help Baylor stay in Big 12
By Michael W. Shapiro Tribune-Herald staff writer
Despite pleas from notable Baylor University alumni and Waco business leaders, Gov. Rick Perry has declined to intervene in ongoing negotiations that may determine where the Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech and Baylor teams end up if the Big 12 collapses.
Perry’s office beat back rumors Thursday that the governor was meeting with officials from the four Texas schools, and spokeswoman Allison Castle repeated a statement saying “decisions about conferences should be made by the individual institutions.”
That’s not the way Baylor alumnus and former Democratic Gov. Mark White sees it.

U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, wants state officials to intervene in the Big 12 conference's crisis.
White said in 1985 the Southwest Conference was imperiled because UT and A&M were eying other leagues. But a couple of strongly worded phone calls to the schools kept the conference together.
“I just said, ‘I don’t think that’d be in the best interest of the state,’ and that’s the last I heard of it,” White said.
“That’s what’s so stunning about this whole affair,” he said. “The governor and the lieutenant governor and the (House) speaker have final control over what happens.”
That’s the feeling of U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco, who Thursday released a statement urging Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst and Speaker Joe Straus, both Republicans, to schedule immediate hearings to determine the impact on the state if the Big 12 is disbanded.
In 1989, when defections of the biggest state schools again threatened the SWC, Edwards said he called for hearings. In a week’s time, he said, Texas and Texas A&M agreed to remain in the conference.
“My point is this isn’t conjecture,” Edwards said. “The House speaker and lieutenant governor can call hearings tomorrow morning if they want to, and it would not be unusual at all for the Legislature to hold a meeting on an important issue like this.”
Intervention made a difference in 1985, 1989 and 1994, when former Lt. Gov. Bob Bullock famously made the case to school officials that Baylor should be brought to the Big 12, Edwards said.
Through a spokesman, Dewhurst didn’t directly address pleas for a legislative hearing but said, “At the end of the day, we need to make sure any conference realignment works for all of our world-class universities here in Texas.”
Greater Waco Chamber of Commerce president Jim Vaughan said he didn’t see Dewhurst making a big push to influence the process.
“I talked to Lt. Gov. Dew-hurst’s office today, and they’re not doing anything,” he said.
But Baylor board of regents Chairman Dary Stone said he had a positive conversation with Dewhurst on Wednesday.
“He was incredibly energetic on the issue and made calls as we spoke,” Stone said.
White had strong words for state leaders, who he said were sitting on the sidelines, as well as Big 12 officials, who he said let member schools get poached while they could have been recruiting teams to join the conference.
“I don’t think we’re seeing any leadership whatsoever,” he said, “and, quite frankly, looking like we’re supplicants and joining some other conference is unbecoming of Texas.”
Of the Pac-10, he said, “I hate to see us join a conference in which we’re going to get outvoted at every turn. What’s the greatness of the media market of Oregon State? Texas is the big deal.”
Edwards said despite gloomy predictions that the Big 12 was done for, he doesn’t think it is predestined that Baylor will be separated from its in-state rivals.
“People in ’89 predicted that the demise of the Southwest Conference was a done deal,” he said. “If it was a done deal, it got undone.”

BLS guy - When I called Baylor the younger sibling, I was referring to the image of a mother forcing the two older children to drag the youngest along with them (which is pretty much how I see Baylor's entry into the Big 12 in the first place). And you're absolutely right that BU is terrific at non-football sports (especially women's) but that is never where the money is. Look at the non-interest in the basketball powerhouse Kansas...BU spends way too much as it is to try to compete in a conference where they're in over their heads.
Wonder what division the Baylor Small-Bears will compete in the C-USA?
Look guys, football isn't the only sport around. Did you notice the Baylor basketball teams this year, or were you too busy making meth in your single wide? Baylor is competitive with it's Big 12 rivals in several sports, just not football. As for talk of Baylor being the "younger sibling," Baylor is quite a bit older than both UT and A&M. Again, not as good at football, but with a longer, more distinguished legacy. And California dude, you may be right that CA schools don't want to play in Waco, but please drop the attitude. If you want to claim that Baylor is under performing academically, give us some evidence. Usually performing badly in football is a good sign for a school's academics. :-)
Baylor better just suck it up and ask the MWC for membership. This Big 12 ship has sailed and it's poor that they're lobbying to keep Texas and Texas A&M from doing what serves them best. Isn't this called welfare? Get real Baylor. Swallow hard. Maybe TCU can be the better (which you weren't in the 90s when you took and ran). Of course, Baptists have always looked down their noses at Disciples of Christ.
Dominate in CUSA? Get real! Baylor got killed by an average UAB team a few years ago and almost got beat by terrible SMU and Rice teams. Houston, UTEP, Tulsa, USM, ECU, Marshall and Memphis would kick Baylor's butt! TCU didn't even win championships in C-USA in football. Maybe Baylor should win a few games against some decent teams (not Texas State, Northwest State, SFA) and get their town and students to go to there games and fill their stadium before they think they can dominate another conference!
We here in Boulder watched Buddy with a big smile the last few days. I actually snorted my coffee out my nose reading some of his emails. Lobby the Texas legislature about a PAC-10 issue? Really? Does Texas influence the West Coast? Get real. Do you really think USC and UCLA want to play in Waco? And this coming from a private, religious school with a sub par academic and athletic record. If your leadership didn't anticipate this coming, you should dump them. Now you probably face the wrath of the other second tier schools you helped screw in the 90s. Don't expect much sympathy from them or the legislature this time. A poster for you here, Adrian, hoped for an invitation from the SWAC. Not sure what that is but it sorta sounds like an STD. Good luck Bears.
Baylor is the younger sibling who tagged along with its older siblings when the Texas schools joined the Big 12. Baylor is the remora following the sharks known as UT and A&M. Baylor, in fine, does not belong in the big-boy ranks.
Shouldn't our legislators be concerned about governing the state instead of this trivial matter? Maybe Dradle McLame will get involved.
Baylor's antics are truly hilarious. Woes me, no one wants us. Welcome to the world you helped create for TCU, SMU, Rice, and UH in 1995. How does it feel? You're not getting any Christian love, are you, Baylor? You will need to fend for yourself - just like everyone else. Great. You are growing up.
I blame this all on an international conspiracy headed by the Bilderberg group to consolidate college football and bring it under the control of the New World Order. It is no coincedence that the Bilderberg group is meeting in Spain right now and just concluded their first week of talks and then all of the sudden the Big 12 disbands. This was all brought on by the false flag oil spill to distract the SEC and the Big 12 from the ever present danger presented by the zionist pac 10 and big 10. President Obama is most definitely a player in this entire conspiracy. Do you here anything from him about this at all? No,I didnt think so. This is a blatant attempt to destroy the Tea Party by taking away what is their favorite past time in the South rendering them desperate and depressed and taking their will to fight against political oppression. Now that the NWO and Bilderberg has ruined college football I am of the opinion that their next target is....... oh you guessed it NASCAR
Dont kind yourself, this is all about football. Baylor more than willingly stuck the knife in the back of SMU, TCU, UH, and Rice sixteen years ago. Baylor has done nothing football wise since then, but prove they didnt belong. Now, when the tables are turned, Baylor wants to complain about how this is not right or unfair. You had your chance, and did nothing with it.
Matt, Every Governor & legislature in the South (the Bible Belt of Republican Conservatism) would be involved in special sessions and virtual revolution if one of their schools tried to leave the SEC (especially to go to "do your thang" California, Oregon and Washington) and you know it. Well, maybe you don't know it because it is obvious that you don't know much about much at all. No matter that Baylor is a private/church school, the leaders of state government have a responsibility to Waco citizens and taxpayers and all Texans. Local leaders have a responsibility to their constituents. Chet Edwards understands that. As I saw, it David Sibley, the next Texas State Senator from Waco, was/is in the middle of the fray...as he should be! This move by TT, A&M and UT helps the PAC--which has been sliding down hill for years--except for USC (a private school) and nothing for the State of Texas...and now look what has happened to USC..loss of 30 scholarships, no bowls for 2 years, no championships (they even had to forfeit their last national championship! PAC fans don't travel...they won't be sending masses of fans to College Station, Austin of Lubbock, let me assure you! This whole UT, TT, TAMU, OU and OSU thing is actually a "bail-out" of the PAC. I would think you'd be opposed to "bail-outs!"
All these Republican wheeler dealers want is Waco's votes...otherwise, they do nothing for Waco to earn 'em!!! kinda like GWB did Waco when he was president. He bought a ranch to look like a cowboy and never rode a horse or stepped in any cow manure--because there were no cows or bulls or steers. Wacoans went crazy for his charade--bowing and scraping at his feet--and he avoided Waco like the plague for 8 years... Don't you Wacoans ever get tired of being used like toilet paper and then flushed down the Republican toilet by these Republicans...I'm talking about Gov. Perry, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst, Speaker Straus, AG Abbott, Senators Hutchison and Cornyn....???? Where's Clifton Robinson? Where's Bob Perry? Where's Drayton McLane? We knew where Democrats Mark White, Bob Bullock, Ann Richards and Chet Edwards were; they were fighting for Waco and Baylor. When all those $millions Baylor draws to Waco from the BIG 12 visitors stop flowing into Waco hotels, restaurants and gas stations, I can just hear the Baylor haters wondering, "what happened?" What happened was that too many Wacoans couldn't/wouldn't get off their big rear-ends and fill Baylor Stadium six or seven Saturdays a year. Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech are supported by Texas (and Waco) taxpayers...and that's why Chet Edward's (an Aggie) efforts are on target. UT, TT TAMU are government entities and what they do is the business of government and the business of all Texans! Yeah, the PAC 16 teams will play in Texas but the majority of people in the stadiums of UT, TAMU & TT vs Cal, Or, Wa & Ca teams will be Texans, not out of staters. PAC 10 fans don't travel...especially to Texas & Oklahoma!!!
The politicians need to stay out of it. We don't need a government takeover of college football. The schools need to work it out amongst themselves. President Starr's call for Legislative interference runs counter to the Texas spirt of independence. We can't call for government help just because it's on an issue we care about.
Other than that, Judge Starr, how would you rate your first week on the job? (Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how'd you enjoy the play?)
The SWAC could expand and offer an invitation.
It has been rumored for months that this breakup of the Big 12 was inevitable if Nebraska chose to go to the Big 10 and other schools, i.e. Texas and TAMU chose to join another conference.....ignoring it has not caused it to go away. To say we are disappointed in leadership; legislatures, regents, and the Big 12 is an understatement. Why has not someone in a position to do so been proactive in at least trying to keep the Big 12 together. I see a lot of weak leadership everywhere I look.
I think too much has been put on finances and too little on education ... It's really all about money isn't it?
I applaud Perry and Dewhurst for their current position. The legislature has no business deciding what athletic conference a school belongs to. The legislature also has no obligation to a private school what so ever.
Chester! You need to stay focused on the VA issues...Leave football alone! The Baylor kids want to win some football games and for once they may have the opportunity if they can backdoor into a weaker conference where they belong....Bears have been sacrificing themselves in the football arena for too many years!Think about the kids getting beat to a pulp, they would like to be in a position for a lower class bowl game instead of homecoming on every ones schedule!
How can the state's top leaders not want to be involved....? This impacts the state and it's citizens as much as it does the schools. I say this is hogwash. They're involved. They just don't want their names pinned to the decisions.
