Republican candidate's ad taken off electronic billboard
By Michael W. Shapiro Tribune-Herald staff writer
An electronic billboard in Bellmead intermittently beamed an advertisement for Republican Dave McIntyre’s congressional campaign for about a week before transportation officials told the billboard’s owner to pull the plug on the ad.

Texas Department of Transportation officials asked the owner of this digital billboard in front of Collin Street Bakery to stop displaying two ads, including one for congressional candidate Dave McIntyre.

Texas Department of Transportation official Gus Cannon said the sign, which is on the property of Collin Street Bakery on Interstate 35, wasn’t permitted to display ads for any entities aside from the bakery.
Cannon said TxDOT received multiple complaints about the advertisement.
Upon learning that the billboard company, Texas Media Properties, didn’t have the required permit, the agency asked the company to pull the McIntyre ad and another one, Cannon said.
The company complied. As of Tuesday, neither ad was being displayed.
McIntyre campaign manager Rod Walline said the billboard cost about $500 a week.
McIntyre is one of five GOP candidates vying for the nomination and the chance to take on U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco. McIntyre’s primary opponents are Rob Curnock, Timothy Delasandro, Bill Flores and Chuck Wilson.

Mmmmmmmm! I LOVE fruitcake! It's fresh pecans, lots of pineapple and golden raisins and a bunch of cherries all held together with honey, vanilla and a little love. Yum YUM! And if you slice it really thin, it looks like a stained glass window!
This is totally absurd! McIntyre clearly didn't do anything wrong and it seems TXDOT is very selective about enforcing rules. My guess is Chet had his hands in this one, McIntyre is a challenge he does not want to face!

The only difference between "Nancy's Pet Chet" Edwards & former Kongressman Gary Condit is that Chet hasn't been caught philandering with an intern yet & the body is still undiscovered...
Your right sodbuster. This smells and I do not like the smell of it. TxDOt is the same people who lost a billion in a budget. They must have nothing else to do
oh to those that smell the behind of Chet the swing voter!! He is not above any other politician! He is on the take by Dems and Repubs here in McLennan County shames me to say. Chet waited on the Health care vote in 2009 till he saw it was going to pass and asked Achmed Pelosi if he could vote against to help his re-election since peoples in his district was putting heat on him to vote against it and she granted his wish!!! so come on Chet is no saint!! Snake maybe but no saint!! So Fire Chet so locals that are granted favors by him will soon surface!!
I agree with those that hold McIntyre harmless for purchasing ad space on the electronic billboard. He acted in good faith and that's that. I agree that Chet Edwards will most likely be re-elected. I disagree with far-right "posters" that Chet is liberal. He is a blue-dog democrat and even if he changed parties to win re-election, he would still vote conservative on fiscal issues and liberal on social issues...No one restrict themselves to a right-wing manifesto or left-wing manifesto. That makes them automatons.
This story had absolutely nothing to do with Chet Edwards and yet you pathetic yahoos trash him in your comments. Chet got re-elected even after the Repubs gerrymandered his district to get rid of him. Why? Because people vote for him. Get over it.
Come on Big Ron. I haven't lost any of my rights. I don't know of any other people who have lost any of their rights either. The problem is people want to disrespect the laws, and "cut in line" and try to look out for their buddies or their families or their family's buddies and laws and different measures have to be put into place. Take the seat belt law for instance. People know that they stand a better chance of living if they wear a seatbelt, but it takes a law for them to do it. Rights aren't being taken away from Americans. I can do the same things now as I did in 1995, 2000, and 2005(just throwing those years out there). The United States is the best country in the world by far.
Sign or no signs, the real sign was Chet's cowardness in not holding a townhall meeting regarding healthcare. Like we (his supporters) are ignorant. Chet;s lost a big portion of the base. Get ready for for a change of guard. By Chet! We are much smarter than you give us credit for.

This is why I will never vote Republican- The new age republicans have departed so far from the roots of their beginnings - it would take us cloning Abraham Lincoln to restore the republican party. My goodness, there are no true republicans left. Look- They cut each others throats- And then they want us to vote for them.
I don't care one way or another about this Bill-board/Sign, but I keep telling you people that We are loosing 'all' of our rights, one at a time!! Stop and think about it!!
Get over it. Chet Edwards get elected over and over every 2 years. Pelosi or not. But just eat your guts out...
Chet Pelosi is a legend in his own mind. TxDOT will get my fruitcake when they pry my cold dead fingers off it.
Everyone has already decided for whom they will vote after the filing deadline passed in this race........So the electronic billboard doesn't really matter!!!!!I guess just something to gripe about!!
This article is vague at the least. I am trying to understand the rules here, but no one has cited what they are. It is illegal for a billboard on private property to advertise anything other than their business? McIntyre's campaign paid for the ad but apparently there was another unmentioned ad that was removed as well. Someone better start looking around town then because there are a lot of billboards around town setting on private property advertising things other than their business. I thought TXDOT's job was to expand and fix I-35, not monitor billboards. No wonder those guys ran out of highway money.
I leave the Republicans to implode themselves. Ronald Reagan must be rolling over in his grave. Everybody knows that in the age of Electronic Media that there are regulations that have to be followed. Get over it.
Giant Red Headed Monsters are scary! Soooo funny! Good job Margret.
Why the heck would TXDOT complain about a Fire Chet Hire Dave billboard? Oh... I get it. Bet Chet called them.
So you can drive around town with a giant tee-pee-shaped billboard with the giant face of Curnock but you can't run a small ad for McIntyre on a electronic billboard? I personally was scared out of my life when I saw what looked like a giant red headed monster coming out behind HEB compared to when McIntyre's mug popped up on this ad.
Why is this news? Who cares, McIntyre is a long-shot in this race. We all know billionaire Flores who has his ad playing on every other commercial is going to get the nomination. When you've got money, you can buy voters. Come on now.
Want a real unethical violation. McLennan County Republican Chairman Joe B. Hinton is using the e-mail list for the McLennan County Republican Party for a shameless attack against his opponent in a primary race Will Jones and using the McLennan County Republican Party web site to just promote his own campaign.
When did TexDot grab power to regulate political speech???
Chet Edwards received the "Pig" Award for the past 6 years for voting for the most pork spending in DC.
Edwards had to be the one to call. What a cry baby
He could advertise on 50 billboards in Waco. He would just be wasting his money. Chet Edwards is a legend. Waco is in bad shape, but without Chet Edwards the last 5 or 6 years, Waco would be even more of a wasteland.
Wait, so unknown to him, the company with the billboard didn't have the correct permits makes him a corrupt politician? Seems to me he was doing business in good faith and the company is at fault here not him. Under the law, McIntyre can sue for the media company for deceptive business practices. He's actually the victim here. The media company violated the law without his knowledge. But seeing that "ethics" probably thinks unwise, I'm sure they would also throw the book at all the victims on Ponzi schemes or the old shareholders of Enron. That's not ethics, that's blind stupidity.
This is the best you can come up with? Of everything happening in Waco, not to mention just in this race, this is the best you can do? A billboard pulled an advertisement! OH NO! CALL THE MEDIA! If you're going to be this nit-picky in this race, what about the Chuck Wilson sign photographed directly next to the billboard? What does that violate? Or Rob Curnock's little melt-down I witnessed at the Waco Tea Party event this weekend? Got his poor little feelings hurt and stormed off like a 2 year old. This is no ethics violation. This is just dumb. Shame on the Trib for treating this like news.
Chet Pelosi says " Take it Down!". Or no fruitcakes for the Obamas.
To Ethics: First of all, you need how to read and understand a news story. You must have gone to the "Chet" school of reading. It clearly states that the McIntyre campaign Paid for this ad. Just like if they buy a newspaper ad, television or radio. It is up to the business to have the proper permits not the one who is advertising the product or service. You need to go back and get a education before you make such a stupid comment as you did.
So Dave McIntyre wants to make law, but yet he can't follow it himself. How typical of a corrupt politician.
That is foolish to just take down paid advertisement. I thought we were in America, free enterprise? To much government interference is never good.
