Former President Bush coming to Waco to support Sibley's state Senate bid

By Michael W. Shapiro Tribune-Herald staff writer

Wednesday March 24, 2010

Former President George W. Bush will attend a private luncheon in Waco next week to support his friend, former state Sen. David Sibley, in his bid to return to the state Legislature.

Local businessman Jim Hawkins is hosting the March 31 event to support Sibley, who is running in a special election to fill the remainder of Kip Averitt’s term in the state Senate.

Hawkins said Tuesday he was working out details of how to accommodate a former president.

“We’re making arrangements, as far as security goes,” he said.

Representatives for Bush and Sibley confirmed Bush’s plans to attend the event.

Bush spokesman David Sherzer noted in an e-mail that the state Senate district includes Bush’s Prairie Chapel Ranch near Crawford.

“Mr. Sibley is an old friend with whom President Bush served during his time as governor, and he is proud to lend his support,” he said.

The two men’s friendship is well-documented.

Bush and Sibley, both Republicans, were political allies when Sibley served in the Legislature. They remained friends after Bush left Austin for Washington, D.C., and they golfed together during Bush’s presidency.

Hawkins and Sibley both served on a Baylor University steering committee tasked with convincing Bush to build his presidential library on the campus.

Bush eventually chose to put the library at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, the city where he and his wife, Laura, live.

Hawkins and his wife, Nell, have hosted a number of charity benefits at “Hawkesdene,” their 17,000-square-foot mansion overlooking Lake Waco.

Hawkins said the state Senate campaign was critically important, adding that after Averitt’s resignation, “We need to fill that void.”

“I’m glad (Sibley) would step up to try and do that,” he said.

Three other candidates have expressed interest in the state Senate seat: Baylor political scientist Gayle Avant, Granbury motivational speaker Brian Birdwell and Burleson businessman Darren Yancy.

For the record, if belatedly, Mr. Hawkins has been a big donor to Chet in the past. Is he still? Would Mr. Sibley, if elected, fight tooth and toenail to pass legislation to invoke the 10th amendment to nullify ObamaCare in Texas or would he even vote yes to such legislation?

The only reason ole good ole boy Bush is coming outta hiding is his old buddy ole pal Sibley is gonna make him money keeping the energy companie's profit's rising! Last time I checked Saddam did'nt do the bombing on 9-11. Those 9-11 bomber's were how many Saudi's? The same Saudi's that stood to gain lot's of money off the energy price rising. Was'nt one of them Bin Laden's brother whom Mr Bush called Bubba? Oh yea he was a family friend to Mr President. Funny thing how Mr Bin Laden has'nt been captured but look how fast we found Saddam hiding in a hole surrounded by lot's of American Dollar's. I think Mr President had more to gain by going to war with Iraq than chasing the real mastermind behind 9-11. Dick Cheney's company took the big contract Halleburton made him I bet record profit's and Bush made big profit's from the energy company! Bush/Cheney have spent billion's on two war's. Our current President Mr Obama stand's to gain nothing from the health care bill and look at all you complaining about it. I did notice this as soon as Mr Obama went into office guess what the gas price's dropped hmm I wonder why we still have two war's going on its because he stand's to gain nothing from it. I think President Obama is doing a helluva better job than Mr Bush. You know why they disagree with him? He's gonna tax the hell outta them haha and they deserve it totally. I will vote for him in 2012 we need people that look out for the poor that's the problem's with the rep they look out for the rich and that's it.

Ok here we go again. Was unaware any name calling beside using the word dumb but I can refrain from that if needed. But it will be hard. Electric rates have increased 64%since deregulation that Sibley Sponsored. States who neighbor Texas and are regulated and use the same mix as for as producing electricty with natural gas, has rates as follows.Texas is about 10.3 per kilo watt Louisiana is 8.3 Oklahoma is 7.3. Despite Mr Sibley saying the fuel mix is the problem, Texas is using less plants now then either state as for as gas fired plants have closed right and left including 4 here in Mclennan County. So that reasoning hold's no water. After retiring due to health , he has went to be a lobbyist for Cap Rock Ind. along with others. Utility companies greatly benefited from deregulation as Texas went from the lowest utility cost to the 3rd highest in the US. I feel that it is wrong to pass legislation so detrimental to all Texans and then go lobby for the people who benefitted the most. No name calling , just facts provided by the Cities Aggregation Power Project, a non profit coalition of Texas Municipalities. I would bet in the next couple of weeks we will see a guest column in the Trib by Ray Perryman saying how good this has been for Texas. Facts are facts and the rates are what they are. 3rd highest in the US.

What color is your Kool-aid? Kipper, I WILL not vote for "Chet the Liberal"!!!!!!!!!!

It is exciting to see everyone so passionate about their respective candidates. The amount of positive publicity generated by Sibley's entry into this race is great for SD 22. He was (and is)a very well respected man throughout the State of Texas and many of us (myself included) will do our best to see that a man of integrity represents us in Austin. It is rare when a man with his credentials (i.e. Doctor, Lawyer, Mayor, Senator, and Baylor Bear) chooses a life of public service and we should all welcome his expertise in legislative matters. After serving this district for well over a decade, I was glad to hear that he was successfull in the private sector. I was sorry to see him leave his post in 2003, but as a husband and father, I understood. Now, I'm just glad the citizens of this district (especially the younger ones who were not politically active when he first served) will get to see him in action again. Sibley is a man of character and a political diamond in the ruff. His personal and professional integrity are a rarity in the political arena. Hooray for SD 22.

If he was not eligable to register in this area, they would not allow him to put his name on the ballot. He held this position some years ago and is now coming back to do more good. He will be elected with no doubt.

It's becoming increasingly obvious that many of you are carrying water for the ethically challenged Darren Yancy. When Yancy isn't having his real estate license revoked for dishonest behavior, he is racing to the courthouse to file another frivolous lawsuit against a non-profit charity. Yancy supporters are (understandably) ticked-off by Sibley's popularity and support in SD 22. They can't attack Sibley's conservative credentials, so they resort to these lame arguments about his residency. It is beyond me why they overlook Yancy's deplorable personal and professional life.

Chris: I did live in the Middle East and other third-world pest holes. So that's why I don't want to import here what was a way of life there. I have nothing personally against Sibley. Chris, the Travis County tax assessor says that has been his principal residence for 8 years. OK. So if he didn't change his driver's license for 6 months instead of 30 days, he's still gaming the law. Either he has been a resident of Travis County or else he misused the homestead law to cheat Travis County out of the taxes he should have been paying there on the higher valued property.

I don't care if Sibley runs or not, I hope he wins, BUT George Bush, who chose to live in Crawford for 8 years because it presented his image, then stiffed us with his library can stay home in his uptown Dallas residence, near his SMU Library. He's not one of us and he never was. I truly resent having my home turned into a media circus just because it's the folksy place that fit Bushes' desired image and then he ditches us for a more cosmopolitan place. Those of us who live in Waco by choice love it. Regardless of where Sibley spends his time now, he is at least one of us, raised his kids here and represented us well in the Senate.

Don't worry about residency. Dick Cheney flew to Wyoming from his home in Highland Park to establish residency outside Texas so that he could serve as vice president. It is just another of those constitutional provisions ignored by Republicans. I think having W., Ken Starr and Sibley in the same room (with other architects of the destruction of our nation) will make Waco famous again... Maybe some bricks will be thrown through Democratic Party headquarters windows and mobs toting guns will show up to greet this motley crew. Heck, this could be the beginning of Texas' move to independence.

I am thrilled that President Bush, who lives and votes in SD 22, has chosen a member of this community to support for State Senate. For those of you who weren't here (or weren't paying attention) when Sibley represented us, let me remind you that he was chosen as one of Texas Monthly's Best Legislators three separate times ('93, '97, '99). He was best known for his ability to work with members of his own party, as well as Democrats, such as the late Lieutenant Gov Bob Bullock. To quote Texas Monthly, Sibley is "the strongest, savviest, most influential member of the Senate." That is kind of person I want representing me and my family in the Texas Senate.

Chris-it does make a difference where Sibley moved to because that is his homestead, in Travis County. To run for this office, you have to be a resident of Dist. 22 for a year. He may own another home here, but he hasn't lived here for 8 yrs. Plus he admits that he never changed his address on his drivers license (there is a law that you have to do that within 30 days), plus he didn't change his voters registration so he's been voting in a county which he doesn't live in. This is a big deal!!! Why vote for someone who lies and cheats??? We have enough of that already and I don't understand why the local Republican Party would allow him to run knowing the rules. Same good old boy group??? That is not a good idea if you are wanting more people to join the party and be involved. We want honest conservatives, not re-runs of bad ones.

I dont think President Bush is going to go to the polls and twist someones arm to get them to vote. If you dont like Sibley, dont vote for him.
