Campaign finance reports filed Monday indicate that challenger Abel Reyna raised $40,000 more than McLennan County District Attorney John Segrest in the past month and spent almost $30,000 more in his effort to unseat the five-term Democrat.

Segrest, 60, the longest-tenured district attorney in county history, reported raising $13,285 from 34 individual donors since the last reporting period ended Sept. 24, while he spent $43,370 in the past month. That leaves him with $1,708 in the bank.

Reyna, 38, a Republican, reported contributions totaling $56,351 from 89 individual donors in the past month. He reported expenditures totaling $71,526 as both candidates continue to spend money on TV and print advertisements in the final week before the election. Reyna reported that he still has $12,174 in the bank.

Not much new ground was broken at Tuesday night's forum in the heated race between McLennan County District Attorney John Segrest (left) and his challenger, Abel Reyna (right).
McLennan County District Attorney John Segrest (left) and his challenger, Abel Reyna, have waged the most expensive campaign among the county races.

In the reporting period from July 1 to Sept. 23, Segrest raised $26,805 while spending $20,120.

During that same time, Reyna reported $22,612 in total contributions while spending $26,931.

Other county candidates saw their campaign contributions drop, while their spending on last-minute advertising pushes rose, campaign finance reports show.

County Judge Jim Lewis, who is running for a sixth term in office, raised $11,550 in the last reporting cycle, a major drop from the $53,100 he raised between July 1 and Sept. 23. Lewis spent $7,993.39 on advertising, mostly with newspapers throughout the county and ads at the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo, and maintains $47,406.78 in his campaign coffers.

Ralph Cooper, the Democratic challenger for county judge, received $575 from six donors over the last month, compared to $4360.80 in the previous fundraising period.

Cooper’s campaign shelled out $12,293.01 for signs, ads and donations to local organizations — an increase from the $5,803.41 he spent in the last cycle — and reported $1,034.40 in cash on hand. Cooper spent $10,653.17 of his own personal funds, including a $10,000 expenditure to print and mail campaign brochures.

In the precinct 4 county commissioner’s race, Republican contender Ben Perry raised $1,720 in the last reporting period and spent $1,921.95 on consultant fees, signs and advertising during the Heart O’ Texas Fair & Rodeo. He maintains $7,677.13 in contributions.

In the previous fundraising period, Perry raised $19,079.50 and spent $10,127.60.

Will Stevens, the Democrat running for the seat, again reported no new campaign contributions. He spent $584.55 on campaign banners, leaving him with $181.64.
