Campaign finance reports filed Monday offer support for those predicting a tight race for McLennan County district attorney.

Other local races, though, reveal candidates far outpacing their opponents’ fundraising totals.

In the district attorney’s race, five-term Democratic incumbent John Segrest raised a total of $26,805, while his Republican opponent, Abel Reyna, reported $22,612 in total contributions. Those totals are from the reporting period from July 1 to Sept. 23.

During the same period, Segrest reported $20,120 in political expenditures, leaving him $32,512 on hand.

Reyna reported spending $26,931, leaving him with $35,880 in the bank as the campaign moves into the homestretch before the Nov. 2 general election.

Segrest, the longest-serving district attorney in McLennan County history, also reported loaning his campaign a total of $6,000 from his and his wife’s personal funds.

Reyna, a criminal defense attorney whose father, Felipe Reyna, is a former district attorney, reported no person loans to his campaign.

Segrest listed 75 individual contributions during the latest reporting period, including 23 from members of the district attorney’s office.

Reyna reported 67 contributions from July to September. The incumbents in the county judge and county treasurer races hold wide fundraising leads.

County Judge Jim Lewis, the Republican seeking a sixth term in office, raised $53,100 between July 1 and Sept. 23. He received donations from 112 contributors, including several prominent business owners, attorneys and bankers.

Lewis spent $15,627.75 from his campaign coffers and maintains $43,850.17 in available cash.

Waco attorney Ralph Cooper, the Democrat challenging Lewis, raised $4,360.80 in the last fundraising period. He reported 15 individual contributions, including $1,250 in in-kind donations from the Texas Democratic Party for access to lists of Democratic voters.

Cooper spent $5,803.41 on campaign expenses, including $3,387.27 of his own funds. He maintains $2,849.25 in cash on hand.

In the Precinct 4 county commissioner race, Republican contender Ben Perry raised $19,079.50 during the past three months, according to his campaign filings. His has raised nearly $55,000 over the course of his campaign and has $9,827.18 in available funds.

Will Stevens, McLennan County DARE officer and Democratic challenger for the seat, did not receive any new contributions, according to his campaign finance report. He used $584.55 of the $766.19 he had remaining from the previous fundraising period for campaign banners, leaving him with $181.64 on hand.

County Treasurer Bill Helton, running for a sixth term in office, raised $9,753.50 in the last fundraising period. The Democrat reported $6,794.28 in expenditures and $6,620.01 in cash on hand. Helton also loaned his campaign $7,075.59.

Helton’s opponent, Republican Danny Volcik, noted no campaign contributions or cash on hand. Volcik listed one $106.75 expenditure for campaign signs.

Candidates in smaller county races didn’t garner the same fundraising appeal.

Only $50 separated the fundraising totals for the candidates in the Precinct 2 justice of the peace race. Democratic incumbent Belinda Summers received two donations totaling $150, while her challenger, Republican Leonard Williams, reported $200 in contributions from two donors.

Summers listed $988.37 in expenditures and carried a debt of $362.24. Williams listed $1,795.43 in campaign expenses, all of which he paid out of his own pockets.
