Baylor University President Ken Starr emphasized the school’s bond with its Big 12 in-state rivals, especially the University of Texas, during a Monday news conference.

UT, with its dominant sports programs and ability to command large television audiences, could hold the cards when it comes to whether the conference sticks together and where Baylor ends up if it does not.

Starr reiterated his hope — expressed Monday in a Tribune-Herald guest column — that the Big 12 remain intact.

And in that light, he offered special thanks to UT President “Bill Powers (for) his very strong commitment to keep the Big 12 together and to keep us moving toward a very bright future.”

Reports have surfaced that UT and five other Big 12 schools could defect to the Pac-10.

News accounts have differed over whether Baylor or Colorado, along with the rest of the Big 12 south teams, would be the sixth school to join the hypothetical mega-conference.

Those reports have sent waves of anxiety through alumni circles, but they also triggered a campaign to keep Baylor with fellow Big 12 schools UT, Texas A&M University and Texas Tech University.

For Starr, the conference maneuvering, which also involves the Big Ten, started immediately after he officially took over as president.

He said, despite being a new face to officials at other conference schools, he didn’t feel at a disadvantage.

“I have spent two very intense days in Kansas City with now 11 of my closest friends,” he said, referring to the recent of Big 12 school presidents and athletic directors. “There’s nothing like this kind of issue to bring people together.”

He said he was encouraged by “an outpouring of very strong and fervent Baylor support” from Baylor alumni and the board of regents.

He said the regents have been pressing for the conference to remain intact and for Baylor to remain with its Lone Star State rivals in the case of a breakup.

“The Baylor nation is really standing up of one cheerful accord and saying . . . ‘Let’s keep the Big 12 together,’ ” Starr said.

He said he was heartened by UT’s resolve.

“There has been a very clear set of statements coming out of the University of Texas, that the University of Texas intends to stay in the Big 12,” Starr said.

Though he noted ongoing conference negotiations were “fluid,” Starr said he nevertheless likes the Big 12’s chances of sticking together.

“We remain cautiously optimistic,” he said.

How many years will the dope-smoking west coast hippies and the rednecks of Tech/Okla State be able to put up with each other? It's all about the $$$, but the expanded Pac-10 is a senseless conference.

Looks like Baylor is done. Just as SMU, Houston and TCU were done when the Big 12 was formed. Colorado has already been invited. Look for OU, UT, AM, OSU and TT to be invited on Friday. They all will accept.

It is clear that Baylor's athletic program is stronger and deeper than Colorado's. Only two schools in the Big 12 have won more championships in the Big 12. That means that Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Missouri, Texas Tech, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma and Colorado have won fewer championships. If the Big 12 disintegrates-and I fervently hope it does not--then it is obvious that Baylor has put forth the money and the dedication, academically and athletically, to deserve to stay with Texas, Texas Tech and Texas A&M if they go with another conference. For the Texas Four--Baylor, UT, TAMU & TT--the PAC is preferable to any other for obvious reasons.

Colorado would benefit more from PAC-10 membership than Mountain West Membership. Also, let's not put down the dollar. Economic freedom is what defines America and what has made it the most successful nation with the highest standard of living in the history of mankind. Surely we should put faith, hope, and love into Christ, but there is nothing wrong with profit, especially where profit benefits the economy and society as a whole. If you work for a living, you are trying to profit. If you are trying to sell something, you are trying to profit. If you play the lottery, you are trying to profit. The only entity that doesn't try to profit is government - and that is why it fails so often, incurs deep debt, and places itself at financial risk. It is about money because money benefits universities. It allows universities to have better facilities, more scholarships, more research programs, more seats, etc. So, in order to have a pragmatic debate about the situation, we have to toss away our false assumptions and averse prejudices against economic freedom and financial gain.

Baylor is in my prayers & I for one feel Baylor is part of the Texas academic/sport family. However, the almight $$ speaks and realignment will happen at some point. With that in mind we should be focusing all energy toward keeping the Bears with the Horns & Aggies. We should also focus on pointing out to Colorado the benefit of them hooking up with the Mountain West as if they don't..then their nearest conference opponent will be over 600 miles away...CU cannot affort that expense...So, yes, let's pray for Baylor University
