Defeated Republican U.S. House candidate Wilson endorses Flores for runoff
By Michael W. Shapiro Tribune-Herald staff writer
Recently defeated U.S. House hopeful Chuck Wilson on Tuesday came out in support of former opponent Bill Flores, a Bryan Republican locked in a runoff with Waco’s Rob Curnock.
Three GOP candidates failed to make it to the April 13 runoff. Timothy Delasandro endorsed Curnock last week, citing Curnock’s long history of work for the local Republican Party.
National security expert Dave McIntyre has said he won’t be picking sides.

Chuck Wilson (left) argued that Bill Flores (right), while a new face to many in the Waco area, shares a common, rural experience with local residents.
Throughout his campaign, Wilson, a Waco residential developer, argued that McLennan County roots would be key to a successful strategy to unseat incumbent U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco.
But speaking to reporters at a podium in the back room of George’s Restaurant in Waco, Wilson argued that Flores, while a new face to many in the Waco area, shares a common, rural experience with local residents.
“Most of you’ve never met Bill Flores, but you know him,” Wilson said. “In Bill, I recognize a man who was raised in the humble home of a ranch hand, a man who has hauled hay under an August sun, a man who had to go break ice on the cattle water troughs on the way to school in the morning.”
Wilson said Flores, who pursued a career in the oil and gas industry, was the embodiment of the American dream and was the best candidate in the runoff.
Flores retired to Bryan near his alma mater, Texas A&M University, in 2006.
“As a lifelong resident of Waco, I’m convinced that Bill Flores has the better understanding of what life in Central Texas is all about and would be a more effective representative for McLennan County and the rest of Congressional District 17,” Wilson said.
After the statement, Flores explained the two men’s common vision when it comes to major political issues of the day: “There’s not a lot of daylight between Chuck and me.”

Wilson is embarassing. He spent his whole campaign singing the same tune: vote for me because only a Waco native can beat Chet! Now that he lost miserably he jumps on the wagon to endorse the big money ticket that is..... not from Waco! His endorsement is empty because it flies in the face of what he said while campaigning. He just wants Flores to cut him a check & make up some of that cash he lost in the election. Flores is everything we don't want in a candidate; why does business success translate into being a congressman? If this district wanted him elected they would mail him contributions. If Flores wins the runoff, I won't even vote in the general. He's no different than Chet so why should I?
It is worth looking into the "relationship" of the former campiagn manager this is claiming he is owed money. I heard he is a confirmed bachelor ( you can decide for yourself what that must mean). I wonder if there is a personal relationship gone sour. As a heterosexual male, I would not want a former girlfriend coming forward causing trouble.
Skeletons, Curnock has been married for 2 years, and this is his first. You're now adding divorce speculation to your list of fake accusations ... like the $90 or whatever you keep claiming someone owes you for a VCR. Get a TiVo already and move on with your life. If you want real skeletons, look into Flores' ties with George Soros, going back to 1994. Flores has spent the last 20 years getting rich playing with other people's money, and now he wants to play with our tax dollars.
It amazes me that just because Flores has a lot of money and has been a successful businessman that he would be penalized for that in a Republican primary. Just because he has money he wants to buy our vote? Give me a break. I don't even know why I read these comments. Both Flores and Curnock deserve better than some of the absurd comments placed on this site. I for one think that Flores is the guy who will beat Chet because I feel that his experience and leadership are more substantial than Curnock's. But I will not bad mouth Curnock in my support of Flores, that is just bad taste in my opinion.
I saw this on a different paper, but the guy basically said that Curnock won with 29% of the vote with only a $100,000, while Flores came in with $600,000+ and won with only 33% of the vote. Turns out that each vote for Flores costs him, on average, $27. Looks to me like the man is spending like crazy to just get nominated. Good thing he's a millionaire because it's going to cost him millions to even try to defeat Chet. Vote for Rob, he isn't a millionaire and he isn't trying to inflate his voting numbers by faking his funding.
I cannot support Rob Curnock because of his unsavory business practices and his complete lack of integrity. When his business was on Valley Mills Drive, I took a VCR for repair and his company either lost, stole or sold it. Then lied about it when I went to claim it. I filed a complaint with the BBB and either he or his employee lied about that as well. ROB Fool me once shame on you , you will not ever have another chance to scam me or the good people of District 17. On a side not we do not know much about Curnocks past, marriages, kids , divorce(s) etc. Curnock, is wasting money and time he has always lost any election where he faced an opponent. He will lose the runoff as well. I am going to work extra hard for Flores, and if Flores doesn't win, I will support Edwards. He has not displayed dishonesty, and has been married to his first wife and has children!!!! We need to know more about Rob's past "CHOICES"!
So Flores was raised by a ranch hand and now has all this money from hard work and education. Sounds like a good choice for congressman to me!
Flores spent the money he did to raise his name identificaton with voters. Curnock's name is well known already because he has lost so many times. I am praying that Curnock does not get the nomination again. He's embarrassing. I'd much rather have Flores.
I'm looking for someone w/enough tenacity and commitment to the District to represent me and my conservative values. Rob has proven both by his life and involvement in our community for 25 years. I'm with Rob!
Oedi and kelly, or whoever you are ... The party actively worked against this district in 2008 and they have said they won't do that in 2010. Money won't be an issue. If you look at heavy Democrat precincts that turned out with straight-D tickets, many of them won't be there in 2010 because Obama is not on the ticket. That alone will cost Edwards more than 9,000 votes in McLennan County. To win this race, we need a true conservative candidate, someone who believes in the Constitution, and someone who will represent us, not be controlled by Washington insiders like Flores is. Every time they airdrop someone in here with money, like Van Taylor, they get destroyed in November. Taylor lost by 20 points, and he at least had military experience. Flores would be a bad candidate and a worse congressman, because he won't represent us, he will represent big business and Washington.
Not really surprised ... Wilson has always been a moderate and it's natural that he would back Kay Bailey's best friend Bill Flores. Lots of Wilson's former supporters saw him for that at the end of the campaign and drifted away to other candidates. Those conservative voters now have a real opportunity to step up and say "Flores is not what I signed up for" and they would be right. When he was a candidate, all Wilson talked about was the need to get someone from McLennan County on the ballot. Now that he's not the guy, suddenly his tune changes. I'm not buying it, even though "buying it" is just what Flores wants to do. Flores spends so much on slick mailers and has Washington insiders running his campaign ... sounds like he's just another Chet to me.
All you Curnock supporters - how do you plan to span the 19,000 vote deficit in McLennan County that he had in the 2008 election? Also, yes, there are rumors that the National Republican Party will fund Curnock this time if he wins - but is that "check in the bank" yet? Remember, last time Curnock couldn't raise enough money to finish his race; what makes you think he can do it this time???? I like Curnock, but he just doesn’t have the means to take out Chet Edwards; Bill Flores does.
I disagree. Curnock has shown us that he cannot beat Chet. Flores has sound morales, great business sense and the money to beat Chet.
I agree John, furthermore Curnock won with about 28% of the vote with only about $154,000 in funds vs Flores' 33% with $604,000 in funding. Curnock can bring in rally supporters, can raise the money, and knows the people. Flores just pumps in his own money and tries to display it as support. You can't buy my vote Flores and you sure as hell can't buy this election.
Suit yourself, but in five years when he is still living in Bryan, you may be sorry! Why would you move to the district in 06 and not run until 10? That's a LONG time to plot and strategize, wouldn't you agree?
I respect Mr. Wilson's opinion but I'm not voting for Bill Flores in this or any election. I sense Flores is just another Taylor/Wohlgemuth candidate who will lose to only fly away to another election which they can try to buy.
In My Opinion ...
