This 'Panther' is a declawed comedy

David Germain

The Associated Press

"There are chuckles, maybe even a belly laugh or two if you're in a charitable mood. But the movie's mostly a waste of time and talent."

"I'm dissappointed in the current trend to remake classics. Both Pink Panther and Willy Wonka were lame remakes at best despite the fact they had hugely talented actors in the lead. I am a big Steve Martin and Johnny Depp fan but sometimes an actor's portrayal of a character becomes that character and no-one else can pull off the eccentricities that made that character unique and a part of our culture. Gene Wilder did it with Willy Wonka and Peter Sellers with Inspector Cluseau. The only reason to remake those movies is blind greed rather than improve on the artform. C'mon Hollywood. Use some imagination. There are plenty of brand new characters our generation of actors cam bring to life without retreading an old one. For 10 bucks a pop, we deserve better."

"First off, I must admit I'm a sucker for The Pink Panther films, and even though the previous Pink Panther stunk, I still went to see this. It was better than the other one, but it's easy to see that Steve Martin is no Peter Sellers. There were a couple of laugh-out-loud scenes, but overall this film was predictable and somewhat lame. John Cleese portrays Dreyfus and does a pretty good job at it. To be honest all the actors in this film, including Jean Reno from the movie, "The Professional", another favorite actor of mine, were pretty good, it was Martin who failed to deliver. I think they should put The Pink Panther to sleep and out of its misery. To be honest I was surprised to see that they were making this sequel considering the previous movie didn't fare too well when it came out. I give this film a 2 out of 5."
